THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Game preview

OHIO STATE VS. HARTFORD

6:30 tonight
? Where: Value City Arena
? TV: Big Ten Network
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 3-1;
Hartford 3-1
? Matchup to watch: The Buckeyes lost 87-81 in overtime Sunday at Auburn because of several defensive lapses late in regulation and in the OT. OSU defenders didn't fight through screens in the final three minutes and allowed a pair of three-point daggers by Alli Smalley. The Buckeyes then let the Tigers loose for five layups in overtime. Practice yesterday focused on both issues.
? Notable: The Hawks are the three-time defending America West Conference champions and have recorded 27, 25 and 28 wins the past three seasons under coach Jennifer Rizzotti. Hartford upset then-No. 6 Duke 53-51 last week in the DePaul Invitational but lost the championship game to DePaul 80-71. The Hawks led by six in the second half but couldn't recover from a 14-0 Blue Demons run. ... Sophomore center Jantel Lavender has recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds in each of the first four games. On the bright side, the Buckeyes have made 70 free throws this season while their opponents have attempted 59. On the darker side, Ohio State is averaging 19.3 turnovers.

? Next: vs. Boston University, 2 p.m. Sunday, St. John Arena in the Buckeye Classic; Central Michigan faces Dayton at noon.

Ohio State's Andrea Walker (51) looks for a shot in a crowd of Hartford defenders in the first half. Walker scored eight points off the bench.

The players on the Ohio State women's basketball team took 48 hours to process how they felt about their first loss of the season, an 87-80 overtime disappointment Sunday at Auburn.
Then the 20th-ranked Buckeyes (4-1) turned the leftover frustration into the kind of defensive heat that turned the Hartford Hawks (3-2) crispy brown during a 63-45 win last night in Value City Arena.
The turnaround, which featured a 22-point, 10-rebound performance by sophomore center Jantel Lavender, had everything to do with ball pressure. The Buckeyes simply didn't let the Hartford guards breathe, let alone set up an offense.
"We came out for this game hungry and more fired up," said Lavender, the Big Ten player of the week. "You can't come out and let a team be more intense than you when you know you have more talent."

It is nice that they are playing much more up-tempo this season and hopefully they will continue to do so as the season progresses. Their outside shooting also seems to be much better this year which will help out can Jantel.
