Kyle Snyder won his first gold medal in five years on Sunday as the United States secured its fourth team title at the wrestling world championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

Snyder, affectionately nicknamed "Captain America" by Team USA wrestling fans, was the 2016 Olympic champion and won his third world championships gold by defeating Slovak Batyrbek Tsakulov 6-0 in the 97kg final. His other gold medals came at the 2015 tournament in Las Vegas and the 2017 competition in Paris, France.



This year, Snyder's primarily rival, Russian wrestler Abdulrashid Sadulaev, was absent from the tournament. Snyder and Sadulaev, nicknamed "The Russian Tank," had met in four of the last five global championship finals, with the latter winning the previous three meetings, causing Synder to take silver in 2018, 2020 and 2021 and claim bronze in the 2019 world championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

Going for gold is Olympic and three-time World champion Kyle Snyder (TMWC/NLWC) at 97 kg. He opened up the day with a win over Azerbaijan World Bronze medalist Magomedkhan Magomedov, 7-4 followed by two technical falls in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Snyder will wrestle Iranian U23 World champion Amirali Azarpira in the finals.

Olympic and three-time World champion Kyle Snyder picked up the gold as well at 97 kg over Amirali Azarpira of Iran, a past U23 World champion. Snyder was awarded the first point after Azarpira didn’t score during the 30-second shot clock. With no change in score a minute into the second period, Snyder himself was put on the clock. Fortunately, he secured a push out just in time to earn a point and lead 2-0.. He earned another push out point and held off all attempts from Azarpira to win the match, 3-0.

Kyle Snyder is headed to his third straight Olympics.

After winning gold in his Olympic debut in Rio de Janeiro while still competing for Ohio State in 2016, then following that up with a silver medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021, Snyder will compete in the Olympics again in Paris this summer after winning the 97kg freestyle bracket at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Snyder, who had a bye to the best-of-three finals after winning a bronze medal in his weight class at the 2023 World Championships, defeated current N.C. State wrestler Isaac Trumble in two straight matches, 5-0 and 4-0, to secure the United States’ berth in the weight class in Paris.

Snyder, who has won three gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals at the World Championships in non-Olympic years, has now qualified for 10 straight Olympics or World Championships dating back to 2015.



Snyder, a three-time NCAA champion at Ohio State who now trains with Penn State’s Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, was the only Buckeye to make the U.S. Olympic team, though multiple other Buckeyes had their own impressive showings at the Trials.
