Kyle Snyder (World Champion, NCAA Champion, OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST, 2018 AAU Sullivan Award Winner)

STUDENT-ATHLETES TO RECEIVE DEGREES SUNDAY

Snyder was the Olympic gold medalist (97kg) at the 2016 Rio Summer Games, the youngest Olympic and world champion in United States wrestling history. The 2017 and 2018 Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year, he lifted the Buckeyes to Big Ten titles in three of his four seasons (including 2018) and the squad won the 2015 NCAA team title, while he was a three-time NCAA champion. Snyder was the 2018 AAU Sullivan Award winner as the most outstanding amateur athlete in the U.S. and 2017 U.S. Olympic Male Athlete of the Year. He was also selected the Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient for Ohio State as the top senior student-athlete.

The 29 summer graduates join 238 current and former student-athletes who earned their Ohio State degree at fall and spring commencement ceremonies in 2017-18. A record 692 Buckeyes were recognized at the annual Scholar-Athlete Dinner in April, while Ohio State had a record 489 Academic All-Big Ten selections and 129 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. Great tournament for Kyle and about as good as I think the US team has ever wrestled as a whole...golds for David Taylor and Kyle Dake, who both absolutely dominated the field...Dake didn't even get a point scored on him, unreal. Also very happy to see J'Den Cox get a gold medal as well. US wrestling is a well-oiled machine right now, so many amazing young wrestlers. But just a huge match for Kyle as he tries to repeat the magic against Sadulaev tomorrow. Going to be an incredibly difficult feat to pull, but man would it be sweet to see Kyle pull it off and beat Russia in the team race.

Definitely a bummer to take a first period fall in a huge rematch, particularly with Russia edging us out for 1st. But this won't be the last time he sees him and Kyle had a great tournament.

Just sayin': This guy is up there with the other Ohio State all time greatest ever athletes, i.e. Archie Griffin & the other Heisman Trophy winners, Jessie Owens, Jack Nicklaus, and Jerry Lucas, etc.

Snyder is seeded No. 1 at 97-kilograms, the premier weight class which will serve as the last Finals of the entire competition. Russian Abdulrashid Sadulaev is seeded second. The two have met in each of the last two 97-kg World Finals with Snyder taking Round One in 2017 before Sadulaev evened the score a year ago.

Additional Olympic medalists in the field include: Valeri Andriitsev (Ukraine, ’12 silver), Albert Saritov (Romania, ’16 bronze) and Magomed Idrisovitch Ibragimov (Uzbekistan, ’16 bronze). Two-time World champion (2011, 2013) Reza Mohammad Ali Yazdani of Iran is also expected to vie for the 97-kg crown.
