The closest thing this man has experienced to a rivalry is BYU vs Utah. Which...how much can they hate each other really? Is it even really a rivalry? Especially since he played at one school then turned around and coached at the other and then leaves and hires the DC of his 'rival". Imagine the Buckeyes hiring a former Michigan player as Head Coach. It wouldn't happen. And anyone who suggested it would be run out of town. (Yes, I know about Bo. But that was OSU to UM. Not the other way around).;
Let's be real: BYU and Utah are rivals for the same reason Oregon plays "Shout" in the 3rd quarter. They heard that older, better programs with actual history and tradition were doing it and then said "Is that what we are supposed to do? Let me get on the horn with the Utes. Hey, it's Joseph. Have you heard about this whole rivalry thing? Yeah, me neither until the other day when Brigham told me about it. Do you guys have a rival? We don't either! Hey! That's what I was just about to ask you! Haha ok. So, I guess we're rivals now! See ya in a couple months! Love ya, drive safe!"
That's his closest to experiencing a rivalry. Even Alabama and Auburn fans have told me that they didn't understand The Game until they were around Ohio State and Michigan fans. There's zero respect between programs. And it goes beyond football. There's no rooting for each other in non-conference games or " it's like a sibling rivalry" type of shit. This is hate. I fucking hate Michigan. I don't like their football team. I don't like their school. I don't like their fucking state. I wouldn't date girls who went there. My son isn't allowed to go there. I don't like taking transfers from there, no matter how good they are. I don't fucking like Michigan.
And Whittingham's answer to the question was as lame as it gets. Michigan fans saying "He's catching on already!" are coping. He doesn't give a flying fuck
He was also worshipped at Utah and has also gotten a pass every year they underperformed. A press conference saying "We tried our best and we only lost 3 games! I couldn't be prouder!" Isn't going to cut it at Michigan. Especially with how dumb their fans are when it comes to understanding football and denying the state of their football program. And after the Buckeyes leave them in a heap next year and he gives an "Aw shucks!" press conference, or talks about "experiencing the rivalry" and "the passion" and all that shit, the fans are going to eat him alive. It won't be worth the money. He could have retired, gotten box seats to all the Utes home games and relaxed.
He's also out of the "graduating young me we can be proud of" world and is in the "we expect national championships and we develop NFL athletes" world and in a conference people actually watch. It's an entire different thing and I don't know if he's built for it.
