DES MOINES, Iowa -- If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em.
The University of Iowa has come up with a proactive method for fighting Web sites built to criticize its coaches by buying domain names.
Web sites ripping college coaches have popped up in increasing numbers in recent years. But the ongoing battle between Internet sites and athletic departments took a new twist last summer when University of Iowa officials purchased seven domain names, including firekirkferentz.com, in order to keep them off the market.
The move didn't become news until this week when, ironically, it was posted on Deadspin.com, one of the most popular blogs on the Web.
These are the sites they bought:
- Firekirkferentz.com
- Firelisabluder.com
- Firegarybarta.com
- Kirkferentzmustgo.com
- Lisabludermustgo.com
- Garybartamustgo.com
- Stevealfordmustgo.com

I think this is a pretty petty way to silence the critics. And honestly, there are a million different site names people could use so why buy just these seven?

Does anyone really care about women's basketball enough to start a website. And if they did start a website would anyone even visit it?

Those domain names probably only cost them a couple bucks a months I imagine...
You're right, its not much. $25 to register and $25 per year per site. But aren't they just asking for fans to get more creative. Or, what's next? Expel the editor of the school newspaper if an article criticizes the coaches?

Could be just a show of confidence to the coaches? I don't know. I was just mentioning that it didn't cost them much, but you're right. If someone wants to start a site, they will just get more creative...

Dude, you don't even have 2,000 posts. Is anyone supposed to take your posts seriously?
I am the greatest poster ever. All shall bow down before me. I don't have 2000 posts because I delete every third one so I don't confuse you simpletons with my enourmous intelligence.
So, to answer your question....no. I'm an idiot.
