Kirk Ferentz (four more B1G COY Awards than Tressel and Meyer combined)

On a day the Big Ten was still basking in New Year's Day glory, the Iowa Hawkeyes took the field and promptly fell behind 35-7 by halftime.

Tennessee coasted from there to a 45-28 win over the Hawkeyes in the TaxSlayer Bowl, formerly the Gator Bowl, also known as the bowl Kirk Ferentz couldn't get on a bus and leave quick enough.

Yeah, Ferentz's postgame had a little heat, with Iowa finishing the year 7-6 despite a favorable schedule and preseason proclamations by some that the Hawkeyes just might win the Big Ten West.

Instead, Iowa lost four of its last five. And there was this postgame exchange with a reporter:

Q: Are you aware of the temperature outside of the program and how do you react to that?

A: "Single digits in Iowa. Do you want to be more specific than that? I'm serious."

Q: People are calling you to be fired, emptying the roster, hating everything, that kind of temperature.

A: "We had a coach to the west of us that won a lot of football games and got fired. If you're in this profession, that's part of the deal. If I'm going to sit around listening to the temperature, reading the temperature on the outside, more what I need to do is take the energy that I can put towards our job and put it on our improvement. That's typically what we've tried to do for 16 years. Did that answer the question?"

Yeah, a not-so-little Bo Pelini reference there.

My favorite:

One thing's certain: Ferentz has a heckuva contract.

According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, if the coach were fired now, Iowa would owe him $221,875 per month for 60 months ($13,312,500). That amount doesn't reduce if he got another job.

And, oh yeah, Ferentz is also reportedly due a $525,000 longevity bonus in four weeks.
