I've had them twice in the past 5 years. The first time, was easily, by far, the most pain I've ever experiened. I would describe it as excruiating pain. In addition, on the way to the hospital, my wife missed the turn and so it added another 10 minutes of hell.

The second time around was still painful, but I was able to get it treated (pain meds) before it got too excruiating.

My Dad is dealing with one of these now- it's about 4mm in size. He hardly ever gets sick, and doesn't bitch or moan about anything, ever. This thing's got him completely wiped out.

I hope I never have to deal with one....

If it's out of the kidney, then forget about the Lithotripsy. Most of the pain is from the back up of urine caused by the stone blocking passage in the ureter or urinary tract. The fucker swells up and causes all that 'knife in the back' pain.

If you feel like you've got to piss alot, yet only a small amount comes out, then the fucker is trying to move into the bladder, and if it's too big to pass, then you're fucked and if not surgically removed, expect somemore of that pain. After my 2nd, I told the doctor to take out the damn kidney. He laughed, I was not kidding!

My brother has had them a few times. First time was right before his senior year in high school. He spent over a week in the hospital passing it. He had to pass it as the procedure to break it up could not be used for some reason. It was so hard on him he was not able to play fall sports.

He had another one a few years ago. He used to be a cop and the pain was so bad on duty one night his partner drove him to a local ER. My brother walked into the bathroom, passed it there and went back on duty.
