Kid cuts cheese, gets handcuffs... We are doomed

STUART, Fla. (AP) -- A student at a Florida school has been arrested after authorities said he was "passing gas" and turning off his classmates' computers. According to a report released Friday by the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the 13-year-old boy "continually disrupted his classroom environment" by intentionally breaking wind. He then shut off some computers other students were using.

I spent a good deal of my elementary career in the hall, the principal's office or getting my butt whacked... and I went to a public school!

Police and handcuffs are not the answer and I don't think Mr. Jimmy Jackson's fraternity paddle (with holes drilled in it for a lower drag co-efficient) turning my ass into purple swiss cheese taught me anything more than pain and fear.

30+ years in the classroom and I don't have an answer except that violence has not worked for me or for any of the students I worked with. What did work with some was smaller class sizes. When I worked as an intervention specialist I was often able to turn a kid around (if he wanted to succeed and if the parents supported the idea) but I worked in a classroom with 7 kids or fewer, my own curricullum and a computer w/internet for each.

That, of course, takes money and a committment to kids most people have written off.
