Desperation makes folks do many things. Read Mullainathan and Shafir's book Scarcity. Perceived deficits are not only monetary, respect, value, peer relations...all of these can trigger suboptimal thinking that result in really stupid decisions. Kerry's real value was triggering excitement and positive attitudes on the sidelines. I suspect that he feels like absolute crap right now, and deservedly so. Dead to me.
