Kenyon Martin rips Cincy over Huggins

And maybe one positive that will emerge is that the Cincinnatti basketball revenue line will be hit with poor attendance and that this will affect alumni support and, hey, maybe Zimpher will see that she needs sports, like it or not.

Perhaps a lesson for someone north of Cincinnatti?

There are already strong indications that Basketball ticket sales are falling off. Few if any of the big boosters that expressed their displeasure through their pocket-books are publicly back in the fold. Worse yet, some residents were indicating they would decline to support any sports at UC following Huggin's ouster. That's bad news for D'Antonio and the football squad.

And, Oh yes, for the first time in a long while there will be no Midnight Madness for UC, they announced no mas on that front last week.

As for the other points made herein on the detriment to UC's future standing as a Basketball school. Consider this -- we are just coming around to closing out one of the most important periods in the annual Basketball recruiting cycle. The interim HC has flat come out and said he CANNOT go out and recruit anyone, period - not till the decision of new HC (permanent basis) and new AD (on which the former may hinge) is writ in stone.

This may be the last year in a long while that UC fields a competitive team come Hoops season.

That wasn't intended for you H&G...

However, all fans are hypocrites...it's just loyalty to your team.

ok...mia culpa.

for the record, Kenyon's acting like a baby...but it is to be expected because that is what he was taught by Thuggy Bear...no loyalty to the institution or any care whatsoever for the school...just loyalty to Thuggs...and Thuggs wonders why he got whacked. :roll2:

You're ripping on Huggins & Martin yourself... therefore we should also be allowed to have a distaste for the "program" he ran over there. For those of us who aren't dedicated UC fans, there isn't much to like in terms of public perception. Maybe some is overstated, but I dislike how Huggins conducts himself (ie press conf). So there's not much of a reason for me to like anything about UC bball.

Please explain to me the hate you guys have for UC....

I am really not sure I understand it.

I am a UC grad that could not attend OSU out of high school for personal reasons. But show me where UC should even be on an OSU fans radar???? UC can't compete, nor does it try to compete with OSU on the football field...and since OSU and UC do not play each other in basketball, I can't understand the all out hate for my alma mater...I am glad Thuggins is gone. I have wanted him gone for years because of the negative image his players have given the school and the city. But for anybody to think that UC's basketball program will never recover you are being disengenious and obviously do not know the history of the program or the drive for sucessful college basketball programs in this region that you from up north refer to 'Cincytucky' (who's being arrogrant??)
in a 90 minute radius of Clifton you have UK, UofL, IU, XU, UC, and OSU...all schools with excellent basketball tradition. UC had only FIVE down trodden years under Tony Yates...but Ed Badger and Gayle Catlett both coached nationally ranked teams (includind a #1 team that was upset by Al McGwuires 1977 Marquette national championship team)...and even Tony Yates brought in two top 5 recruiting classes...

Hate UC all you want...I'll never understand it...But the PROGRAM will be fine. Too many have been brainwashed by Thuggins to see the past and the future. UC will suffer for a couple of years because of the logistical nightmare Zimpher created in recruiting with her timing...but the moment Skip Prosser steps on campus next season, that will all be forgotten.
I can appreciate your perspective, Honor&Glory, so my comment is not a disparaging one. During my 17-year residency in the Queen City, though, I encountered more than a modicum of OSU disdain. It was (and still is) reflected in the Cincinnati sports press and on the airwaves. UC's basketball success notwithstanding, football rules in Cincy, from peewee through high school....to the Bengals (at least this year). I used to tune in WING in Dayton to get the Bucks on the radio, though, because the station in Cincinnati operated from what seemed an underground bunker in Mill Creek For some older Buckeye fans like me, dislike for UC basketball has its roots in '61 and '62 more than anything Bob Huggins may have done as BB coach. The "thuggy-bear" stuff provided what I would call a "politically correct" higher ground from which to disparage the UC program. If Skip Prosser can be lured back to Cincy, I can picture the Buckeyes and Bearcats in some kind of Ohio BB holiday tournament on a regular basis.

I understand and you make perfect sense. While I am fan of the program, I have never been a fan of Huggs...ever.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for Prosser...his wife still works in Cincinnati and they have a home here. He'd fit the mold that dr. z is trying to fill.

You are right...I am critical of Martin and of Huggins...not the UC program.

That makes more sense. Good luck getting prosser, things will have to go sour fast in Winston-Salem. We'll see what we can do for you in the ACC-BigTen challenges in the future... you'll have to wait a few years tho.

Just curious, Honor&Glory.....

After UC, did you make it to OSU as a grad student...or is there some other reason for your OSU affinity?

nope...not yet, anyway. I was raised a Buckeye fan by my dad and I know if circumstances had been different (regarding family illnesses and finances) that I would have gotten my degree from OSU...but as things were, I could not pay for my school AND pay for living expenses if I moved away from home...but I have always been an OSU fan. The good thing about being a Buckeye fan is that its a God given right to be a Buckeye fan if you are born in Ohio.

If they land Prosser, I think they'd have as good as shot as anyone with Mayo, Walker, and Ellis... maybe Wright too. Mayo's crew could change Cincy's fortunes very quickly, plus give them national credibility similar to Matta this past year (bringing in the Ohio/Indiana connection). They were looking at Cincy very hard before Huggy was executed.

I wouldn't give up on them so quickly in the long-haul, though they'll most likely be a disaster this coming season.

Do you really believe someone like Prosser would take on the UC job - in light of the uphill battle to meet the changed goal-posts of academic accomplishments in the post-Huggins era?

That's just it...Skips reputation for fielding competitive teams while upholding the high academic standards of the institutions that he has worked for (Xavier, Wake Forest) FIT the model that Dr. Z wants...plus his players have represented their respective schools with class and dignity. Really, Prosser is the perfect fit for UC...maybe not for him, but defenitley for the school.
