Four-star UK QB signee now says his top goal is to sign pro baseball contract
Matt Ponatoski, a Moeller High School football and baseball standout who committed to play quarterback for the Kentucky Wildcats, said the MLB draft in July remains his first option.
“Option 1A is to go be a (MLB) draft pick and go get drafted and go be in an organization at 18 rather than go to college and be in an organization at 21, which is not a bad option either. I want to be drafted. That’s 1A for sure.”
And the chances that he never makes it to campus appear to be increasing. “I think people who don’t talk to me face to face might get an idea that I want to go play college football,” four-star quarterback signee Matt Ponatoski said in an appearance on Overslotbaseball.com podcast that published over the weekend. “I do, but that’s option 1B.
In February, UK baseball coach Nick Mingione said his staff had already coordinated with the new football staff to develop a plan for Ponatoski to play both sports in college. At the time, Baseball America ranked him as the 56th-best 2026 draft prospect, but those rankings have slipped over the course of his senior season. Now, Baseball America ranks him as the 55th-best high school prospect in the draft, but outside the top 100 eligible players at No. 139.

New coach Stein says Kentucky will win big 'because of me'
Kentucky coach Will Stein took the podium Monday at his first SEC media days and was asked why he thought he could win big at the school."I think because of me, to be honest," Stein began.

Indeed, Stein gave a detailed, elaborate answer beyond why he felt he would be the one to help Kentucky win.
"I know what it takes," Stein said. "I have seen it at the highest levels. I know what it takes to recruit at this level. You just got to believe. Is it going to happen overnight? I don't know.
"I know the players that we can get here. I know we can recruit north, south and east. People come to Lexington and love it. The longer I live there, the more I am like, 'Wow, this place is incredible.' It's got everything that you want. You have to go attack. You can't sit back and wait. That's one thing I refuse to do at Kentucky is to wait."

Stein could be a good hire. If kentucky has some money to get the players he needs for his system, they certainly could improve.

2) Power 4 college football teams need at least $25M - $30M to be highly competitive these days. Maybe even more in the really highly competitive SEC. Somehow I doubt that Kentucky (an acknowledged "basketball school") will allocate that much NIL money to their football program. Kentucky finished in 11th place in the SEC last season. Is it really worth it to the school to fund a lesser amount of money (i.e. $10M) to football and maybe move up 5 or 6 spots in the SEC standings when that additional money could make their basketball team a legitimate contender for a Natty again?

The first-year Kentucky coach is calling for fans to 'scream obscenities' to make Alabama feel as uncomfortable as possible for Saturday's SEC opener
College football fans have never needed permission to hurl a stream of obscenities at their opponent or sneak contraband into the stadium, but the Kentucky faithful have the green light from coach Will Stein this week.
With No. 12 Alabama coming to Lexington for Saturday's SEC opener, Stein wants to make Kroger Field an inhospitable environment for the Crimson Tide. Speaking with Kentucky Sports Radio, Stein wants the fan base to become the "loudest 65,000 group of people in the history of the world."
If Stein gets his way, parents may want to pack a set of headphones for the children because there might be some four-letter words thrown Alabama's way this weekend. Throw southern hospitality out the window.
"I want them in there 45 to 30 minutes before, in their seat, standing up, screaming obscenities at our opponent, making them feel very unwanted in Kroger Field and creating an environment of excellence for Kentucky football," Stein said. "I mean, that's what it's about. You want to see a great product on the field. I want to see insane fans in the stands as well."
With college football stadiums now serving alcohol, an interesting dynamic was created. Sometimes, there are empty seats scattered throughout the venue as fans seek refills. Stein's solution is simple: Go old-school and sneak booze into Kroger Field.
"Sneak a flask in," Stein said. "Sneak a flask in. Again, do whatever you got to do, right? Get your drinks ready. Sit in your chair, all right, and start cheering. And then once you're done with the drink, go back in as fast as you can, and come right back out."
There's no word yet on whether security measures at Kroger Field will be loosened to accommodate Stein's request.
Stein has certainly brought a renewed energy to the Kentucky program, and that might help him on Saturday. Alabama is the more talented team by a clear margin, but the crowd in Lexington should be amped up for Stein's first game in SEC play.
