Source: Donovan to leave

GAINESVILLE - - A source close to the University of Kentucky athletic program tells Fox 35 Sports that Billy Donovan will resign as Florida Gators' head basketball coach to take the same position at Kentucky.

The University of Kentucky has called a 4:30PM press conference in which the school is expected to announce the firing of head basketball coach Billy Gillispie. Kentucky has reportedly waited until a replacement coach is in place before letting go of Gillispie, who spent two seasons in Lexington.

Billy Donovan has denied any interest in the job. That appears to be an unfounded rumor.

SportingNews

Donovan issued a statement saying he is committed to the University of Florida program and would not be looking at any coaching vacancy that emerges this offseason.

Gillispie never signed a full contract. He's been operating under a Memorandum of Understanding, which at today's press conference, the AD and UK President stated was a "year to year' deal, to their understanding.

Sounds like Gillispie will be seeing a lawyer to see if he can get more than 1 year as a buyout/settlement, but without having signed the 7-year contract, he'll probably have a tough time.

Shades of RichRod.

Sounds like Gillispie will be seeing a lawyer to sue his idiot of an agent!!!!!see if he can get more than 1 year as a buyout/settlement, but without having signed the 7-year contract, he'll probably have a tough time.

I saw one suggestion (not a rumor) that sounded like a good idea - Jay Wright. I know he has strong ties to Villanova, but he's a bright young coach who has proven a bit more than a guy like Ford, and UK might be a nice step up for him.

I don't think UK is going to think this through and make a good decision though. The AD/Boosters are gonna make another rash impule buy. For as much as UK misses Pitino and Smith, I think we're seeing now that they miss C.M. Newton even more.

I had heard Wright's name brought up also among the talking heads but he has very strong ties to the East and especially Philly. It also has one of the top five recruiting classes coming in depending upon who you want to believe. However, how many Philly cheese steaks can the money that the University of Kentucky throw at you buy:huh: The same can be true of John Cal. He has the supposedly top recruiting class in the country coming to Memphis next year but can Memphis afford him and does he love ribs and jazz that much. I also heard the announcer there was doing the Michigan State/Kansas game and he mentioned Izzo's name and said that he did not think Izzo thought that he was appreciated enough around East Lansing. Never heard that before and it would be hard for me to believe he would leave that program was all the ties that he has to it.

I remember when this job opened up two years ago and Travis Ford was at UMass. I thought then that they should offer him the job and I think the same today. They keep on saying that Billy Clyde did not understand all the tradition amongst other things that weren't with Kentucky basketball. Travis Ford understands those things because he has seen them. I went to a regional in Lexington in the early 90s and those people live and die Kentucky basketball. I mean I talked to a guy who was probably in his 80s and he could talk basketball recruiting with almost anyone. It is truly unbelievable... almost like Ohio State football:)

Calipari could meet with Kentucky on Monday

Memphis coach John Calipari has let Kentucky officials know that he's interested in the school's vacant head coaching position, and he could talk with UK athletic director Mitch Barnhart as early as Monday, a source with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com on Sunday.
Kentucky fired Billy Gillispie on Friday after just two seasons, and CBSSports.com immediately reported Calipari as a legitimate candidate despite the Memphis coach telling local media he planned to remain at Memphis for a 10th season. Multiple sources close to Calipari have said there's no guarantee he would take the Kentucky job if offered, but those same sources have privately insisted for weeks that if Kentucky showed interest Calipari would listen.
One possible problem with jumping to Kentucky, some have claimed, is that Calipari has the nation's top recruiting class lined up, and he would not want to leave that behind. But those close to Calipari believe it's possible to take parts of that recruiting class to Kentucky -- specifically unsigned prospects DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall -- and that if Calipari could pair it with Patrick Patterson and Jodie Meeks the Wildcats might threaten for a Final Four next season.

Okay first guess is that Calipari is entering the phase of contract negotiation. Nope! He did that 11 months ago.
Apr 26, 2008 2:01 pm US/Central

Memphis coach John Calipari has signed a $2.35 million contract extension through the 2012-13 season.

Director of Athletics R.C. Johnson released Saturday the details of the agreement that was announced earlier this month. The contract reflects a $500,000 increase over last year's salary and if he remains through the 2012-2013 season, he'll get a $5 million bonus.
?My position has never wavered,? said Calipari. ?As long as the school was committed to having a top-10 national program, I wanted to stay. Obviously, I feel that this has been done in the past and will continue to be done in the future.?

So is he not content with the present contract and using offers from other schools to get Memphis to leverage another contract extension?
Sounds like it from this article.

John Calipari insists Memphis 'is where I want to coach' : GoMemphisTigers : Your leading source for The University of Memphis Tigers

Calipari, who just completed his ninth season with the Tigers, told a group of reporters at Wilson Air Center today that Memphis is ?where I want to coach.?
Meanwhile, multiple sources close to the Memphis program told The Commercial Appeal that athletic director R.C. Johnson has been working in recent weeks to secure funding for additional years and dollars to redo a contract that pays Calipari $2.35 million annually. Calipari also has an annuity that averages $1 million per year over the course of his current deal, which runs through 2013.
Yet that won?t stop Calipari?s name from being linked to openings around the country, most prominently at the University of Kentucky, which fired Billy Gillispie today. Another major program looking for a coach is the University of Arizona, where Calipari could also pop up on a speculative list of candidates.
Because of the size and scope of Calipari?s current deal, which is likely to be sweetened in the coming days, the group of schools that would be able to match or exceed it is extremely small. Kentucky, however, might be one of them if Calipari becomes a target of its coaching search.
Though Memphis could lose four starters before next season ? in addition to seniors Robert Dozier and Antonio Anderson, freshman Tyreke Evans will almost certainly enter the NBA Draft, and junior Shawn Taggart could also pursue professional opportunities ? the Tigers expect to be in the title mix next year with the top-ranked recruiting class in the country.
In the fall, Calipari signed the nation?s No. 1 shooting guard, Xavier Henry of Oklahoma City, and another top-50 shooting guard in Nolan Dennis from Dallas. Two highly rated junior college prospects, wing Darnell Dodson and forward Will Coleman, also signed letters-of-intent in the fall. Earlier this month, Memphis received a verbal commitment from DeMarcus Cousins, the nation?s No. 1 big man. The top high school point guard, John Wall, is uncommitted but said recently that Memphis was his No. 1 choice at the moment.
The comfort level of Calipari?s family is also important. His second daughter, Megan, is a freshman at the U of M.
?I want to be here,? Calipari said today. ?This is where I want to coach, and my name will be tied to every job that?s open, and our fans I think have gotten used to it.?
