Cardinals hire Ken Whisenhunt as coach

By BOB BAUM
AP Sports Writer

PHOENIX (AP) -- Ken Whisenhunt helped the Pittsburgh Steelers and their young quarterback win a Super Bowl. Now he will take over for the Arizona Cardinals, where another youngster is at the controls of the offense, but the franchise has made losing a way of life for a long, long time.

I'm surprised that this hasn't talked about more by the "experts." Original speculation was Grimm or Whisenhut as the head coach, with whoever didn't get the job remaining with the team. Evidently, something didn't go as planned. It will be an interesting to see how this plays out.

Why do I get the feeling that the Steelers are in for a long hard year next year?

Beyond that, does anyone think that Wisenhunt will get Arizona to the playoffs? In that division, I think it's a distinct possibility.

It's a good place to go for an offensive coach. If they can improve their OL and defense they could be good.

I wanted him to be the Steelers head coach over Russ Grimm. Grimm has experience developing game plans under Cowher, so it's not like he is completely new to that element. However, Whisenhunt was good at working with Roethlisberger, and he could have taken the offense up a level (notice how well the passing offense began to click at the end of the year, involving three 80+ yard games by Santonio. That was Whisenhunt).

Wow... That job, the Bidwell family and everything that goes with it seems like it would be suicide. Other than '98 can anyone remember when the Cards were even a threat? As far as I can remember they have always been a gimme on the schedule of 90% of the league.

That new Stadium and eveything, they should just take that team away and give a new city (NOT LA) one.

Whisenhunt undeterred by desert futility

ANDREW BAGNATO

Associated Press

TEMPE, Ariz. - Ken Whisenhunt has a degree in civil engineering. That background ought to come in handy as he tries to rebuild the Arizona Cardinals, who have had one winning season in 19 years in the desert.
The Cardinals have resisted many efforts to turn them into a winner. But Whisenhunt, who joins the club after three years as Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator, thinks the team has the tools to become a playoff contender.
