Griffey returns to Reds lineup, but leaves with stiffness
August 5, 2004
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Ken Griffey Jr. returned to the Cincinnati Reds' lineup Wednesday night for the first time in nearly four weeks, then left in the fifth inning with stiffness in his right hamstring.
Griffey went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run. The team said his early exit was a precaution for the veteran slugger, who hadn't played since July 10, when he tore his hamstring.
Griffey, activated from the disabled list Tuesday, played right field instead of center against the San Francisco Giants. Ryan Freel moved from third base to right when Griffey left.
Before the game, manager Dave Miley planned to keep Griffey in right field through this weekend's games in Colorado.
``It's just less ground to cover,'' Miley said. ``We'll let him get his feet on the ground.''
Griffey, in the midst of a resurgent All-Star season in which he hit his 500th career homer, didn't mind changing positions. He's batting .251 with 20 homers and 60 RBIs. ``I want one of those scooters to ride out there on,'' Griffey said with a grin.
