Ken Griffey Jr. (MLB HOF)

very poor analogy. you should be going 120 mph in sports at all times. there are no speed traps in sports. if you could see into the future and know that you are about to hurt your shoulder diving for this ball, that would be one thing. but the second you hear the crack of the bat and your first instinct is "Hmmmm, should i go 120 mph trying to get this ball or should i slow down and get it on the bounce letting 2 runs score?", well then you shouldnt be playing major league baseball.
baloney. ive never seen him rediculously dive for balls he couldnt get. when he sees the ball....he goes at it. thats why hes a great defensive center fielder.

and im sure had he held up on all those balls that he dove for and got injurred...you would be leading the brigade of people who understand why he didnt lay out for them. if he pulls up short and takes it off a bounce, the fans and cinci media label him as somebody who doesnt care. hes screwed both ways. without a cyrstal ball there is no way you would say..."eh, its just 2 runs, at least he didnt get hurt diving for that ball." theres NO WAY. dont even claim you would.

i was at a game where he struck out twice his first 2 at bats and got boos from the "fans". now its the bottom of the 9th and they are down 4 or 5 and he hits a 2 run shot, and hes everybody's hero? no, those fans dont deserve ken griffey junior.
I would never dog him for pulling up on a ball that he knows he can't get. I have played baseball and softball as an outfielder. Yes I react quickly to the ball hit off the bat but if I know that I can not get there with all my talent and speed then I hold up and let it drop. I know there are certain situations were you get caught up in the moment but you have to know when to stop and when to dive.

Well if people were booing him for stricking out the first two times then they need to shut the hell up because things like that happen. I take the good with the bad. So what, your point is kind of mute. Blah Blah BlaH!

no....i put skippy in there because i felt like it....not because i wanted to fight. who wants to fight over a message board?

on the other hand....you called me junior. does that mean you want to fight me? does that mean you are guilty of the same thing you wrongfully accused me of? (wanting to start a fight).

sure we can disagree and have opinions. but when you run out of banter, dont just accuse me of wanting to start a fight. im just having a discussion about the crap junior goes through for idiot fans who boo him for no reason.

I agree with you that there are alot of idiot fans who boo him for no reason. There will always be band wagon fans! When the team or players are doing great then they want to cheer but when they are playing like crap or when they get hurt they jump off the wagon. I am not one of these fans. I still follow my team. This is what's wrong with the reds:

Phillies acquire Lidle from Reds - the Phillies acquired starting pitcher Cory Lidle from the Reds on Monday for two minor leaguers and a player to be named. Cincinnati obtained Class-A outfielder Javon Moran and left-handed pitcher Joe Wilson in the trade. The Reds plan to assign both players to Class-A Dayton. "We were very pleased to be able to add three quality players to our system,'' Reds general manager Dan O'Brien said.

The Reds got three single A prospects. Come on now. How long will it take before these players are ready for the majors, two or three years? Trade for players who can play now or in a year or so! As long as Danny boy and the current owner are in Cincinnati, the reds will never do what it takes to win!

Just look at what Lidle did for the Reds: Lidle, 32, has pitched at least five innings in 22 of his 24 starts and has gone seven innings 10 times. He is 52-49 with a 4.56 ERA in seven major league seasons. Yes he is is 7-10 with a 5.32 ERA in 24 starts but he had three complete games. I know he isn't the greatest pitcher but he's one out of two (Paul Wilson) that the Reds have. Now they only have one quality starter. Good Job Reds Management!

last time i checked....the reds had a big fork sticking out of them. i dont expect them to be making any block buster deals for this year.

griffey finishes another season on the DL

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Ken Griffey Jr. will miss the rest of the season because of a torn right hamstring, the latest setback in a long line of injuries for the All-Star outfielder.

Griffey will have surgery Monday, the Cincinnati Reds said. Team medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek said Wednesday that an MRI exam showed Griffey had ruptured his hamstring last week in San Francisco.

Griffey, who hit his 500th career home run earlier this season, could be fully rehabbed in time for spring training, Kremchek said.

<TABLE cellPadding=1 align=left border=0 vspace="5" hspace="10"><TBODY><TR><TD><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle>ADVERTISEMENT

Griffey had moved over from his usual spot in center field for the game, his first action in nearly four weeks since tearing his hamstring.

``He had a complete rupture of the hamstring off the bone,'' Kremchek said. ``He knew it wasn't right, and that's why he hadn't really played since he injured it in San Francisco.''

``He didn't come back earlier because I think he was hoping he would be able to get over this and pinch-hit or he'd be able to do something to help the team,'' he said.

The new injury was similar to one Griffey had on his left side three years ago. But that one was a partial tear that healed without surgery, Kremchek said.

In recent years, Griffey has been plagued by injuries.

Griffey missed more than a month with a torn hamstring that bothered him throughout the 2001 season. He then spent two long stints on the 15-day disabled list with a torn knee tendon and a torn right hamstring in 2002.

Griffey went on the DL twice again last year for a dislocated right shoulder and torn ankle tendon.

This year, he was voted an All-Star starter for the 12th time but missed the game because he strained his right hamstring in Milwaukee right before the All-Star game.

Griffey was batting .253 with 20 homers and 60 RBIs. He had homered just once since hitting No. 500 on June 20.

Earlier Wednesday, Griffey had been joking in the Reds' clubhouse about Adam Dunn's mammoth home run Tuesday night against Los Angeles. The ball traveled an estimated 535 feet on the fly, bounced on the street outside Great American Ball Park and came to rest on a piece of driftwood in the Ohio River.

``Someday I'll be that strong,'' Griffey had said. Griffey also said he was available to pinch-hit. The Reds announced the injury about four hours later.

BUCKEYENATION....looks like he is done for the year, so I guess there will be no cheers for him this year.

unneccesary comment by BUCKEYENATION27

ill still cheer him for the great first half he had. you can be a dick if you want though.
BUCKEYENATION

That was pretty classless thing to post, I think your taking my remark to personal, no offense meant towards you, just stating something that was obvious to everyone who follows the reds.

Great Griffey Jr. story

My brother works in Cincinnati and sent me this story:

Grandpa stricken in stands, boy finds comfort on field

By John Fay, Enquirer staff writer

Bill Summee has been a police officer since 1992, but nothing prepared him for the situation he encountered Wednesday night.

Summee, now a security officer for the Reds, responded to an emergency call to Section 143 at Great American Ball Park during the seventh inning. A man had collapsed, and paramedics were working on him.

As they tried to revive the man, who did not survive the apparent heart attack, an officer handed the man's 6-year-old grandson to Summee.

Little Antonio Perez had come to the game with his grandfather, whose name the Reds did not release, to celebrate Tony Perez Bobblehead Night.

Over the next 2½ hours, Summee and numerous Reds players and coaches stepped up to comfort and entertain the boy.

"It was a bad situation," Summee said. "But I'm proud of the way we handled it as an organization."

Once he had the boy, Summee's first order of business was to get Antonio out of the stands.

He wanted to get him away from where his grandfather was being treated.
"With all the commotion, I wanted to get him out of there," Summee said. "I took him down to the concourse. He laid his head on my shoulder and asked, 'Is my Pawpaw going to be all right?' "

Summee knew by then the boy's grandfather would not recover.

"We didn't think we should be the ones to tell him," Summee said. "We didn't lie to him, but we thought his parents should tell him."

At one point, the child asked: "How am I going to get home?"

"I told him I'd take him home," Summee said. "But he knew his grandmother's name and phone number."

A call was made, but the boy is from Hamilton, and it would take awhile for his parents and grandmother to get to the ballpark.

Summee still wanted to get Antonio away from the stands, so he took him into the Reds' bullpen, where bullpen coach Tom Hume let him sit on the bench for the last two innings of the game.

Then Ken Griffey Jr. became aware of what was going on and took charge.

"Win or lose, he was coming in the clubhouse," Griffey said.

As the Reds wrapped up their 8-5 victory over the Braves, Griffey went to the bullpen and got the boy.

The players included Antonio in their high-five celebration. Then they took him into the clubhouse.

"We play a game," Griffey said later. "What he was going through doesn't compare.
"It was important that the little guy not be by himself."

Clubhouse manager Rick Stowe said the other players followed Griffey's lead and rallied around the boy.

"Jacob Cruz, Jason LaRue, Junior, they were all great with him," Stowe said. "They gave him bats, balls, wrist bands. Felipe Lopez signed the helmet he wore in the All-Star Game and gave it to him."

"Ken Griffey Jr. was extraordinary," Summee said. "He went completely out of his way to do everything he could."

Said Griffey: "We just tried to make a bad situation a little better."

The more I find out about Griffey the worse I feel for ever ragging on the guy. He's a better person than he is a baseball player and he's a first ballot HOF player.

Pure class by the whole team. Nice to see a story about something good that comes from sports every now and again.

Griffey JR closing in on a couple of Yankee greats

As of 8/20/05 Griffey's all time rank in the following:

Career HR
12. Mantle 536
13. Foxx 534
14. Griffey JR 530

RBI
38. Dimaggio 1537
39. Griffey JR 1529

I was as turned off by JR with all the injuries as anyone but the class and determination he's shown to comeback and perform at a high level makes me feel very dumb for ever doubting his heart.

Also the rareified air he's getting into with his career numbers is impressive indeed. In addition to Mickey and Joe D he's probably going to pass Mike Schmidt and Dave Parker in Total Bases this year for 40th all time. Also he's 19 Runs shy of some guy named Clemente. Just look at the names he keeps company with and remeber he's a 12 time All-Star, an All Star MVP, one of 13 players ever selected as a unanimous MVP and has 10 Gold Gloves.

Dare I ask if his HOF credentials are in question?
