Coach has second brush with NCAA in 17 months


BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson will live with his penalties.
Some Hoosiers fans and alumni may not be so inclined to accept them.
Sampson's second brush with NCAA violations in 17 months has created a stir. There are those who contend the former Oklahoma coach's have harmed the university's reputation so badly that taking away his $500,000 raise and a future scholarship do not go far enough.
"There are certainly some fans who believe the coach should have been fired," said Patrick Shoulders, vice president of the university's board of trustees. "But I don't think it should hurt the school's image, and I don't think it will in the long term."

I was watching the Indiana/PSU game this weekend and they had a short interview with someone on the board of trustees at Indiana, it may have been the AD now that I think about it, but his tone said a ton about how they feel about Sampson right now.

Indiana assistant coach Rob Senderoff will resign Monday in the wake of the recent phone scandal involving the Hoosiers, according to two sources close to the program.

Senderoff has become the "fall guy" for Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson, who came to Bloomington and was immediately hit with NCAA sanctions back from his days at Oklahoma.

Sampson wasn't allowed to make any phone calls for one year, ending in May, because of more than 500 illegal phone calls made when he was with the Sooners.
Senderoff and the current staff made more than 100 illegal calls over the past year, including 10 three-way calls in which Sampson denied having the knowledge that Senderoff was on the line. Senderoff, who joined the staff in 2006 after four seasons at Kent State, was penalized by not being able to go out on the road recruiting for a year and not being able to make recruiting calls

The 34-year-old Senderoff has been coaching for 15 years, including stints at Yale, Towson, Fordham and Miami (Ohio). Sampson lost a $500,000 bonus for 2007-08 and the team lost a scholarship from 2008-09.

Sampson 'satisfied' by report

Embroiled in the second investigation into improper telephone calls to recruits since his arrival at Indiana last year, Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson said Thursday that he is satisfied with a univer sity report to the NCAA that has already led to the resigna tion of an as sistant coach, the forfeiture of one scholarship and new restrictions on recruiting.
Sampson, who also gave up a scheduled $500,000 pay raise, said he didn't know whether the self-imposed penalties would satisfy the NCAA.
"The report speaks for itself," he said during a news conference at Assembly Hall, his first public comments since the resignation of assistant Rob Senderoff on Tuesday. "I read the report and agree with the school's findings."

Phone call participants named
IU player, recruit's mom contradicted Sampson on calls

Indiana University basketball player DeAndre Thomas and the mother of star recruit Devin Ebanks told investigators Kelvin Sampson participated in three-way phone calls that violated previously imposed NCAA sanctions against the IU basketball coach.

When IU released a report Oct. 30 detailing the violations, numerous names were redacted. The Star made another public records request, asking specifically that it be redacted only to the extent required by law.
The second version revealed those involved, except Thomas. However, the circumstances in the report make it clear he was the player interviewed.
Ice Miller, the Indianapolis law firm that prepared the report, interviewed Thomas and Ebanks' mother and Keith McClure. McClure, who was involved in the recruitment of William Buford, said he "did not recall ever speaking to Sampson."
IU also released the names of other people involved in the three-way calls.
Four calls involved DeJuan Blair, currently at Pittsburgh; one involved Dele Coker, currently at St. John's; one involved Buford, a high school player who has signed with Ohio State; and one involved Yancy Gates, a high school player who has signed with Cincinnati.

Funny, every time you go to bed with a whore you wake up next to one.

IU sold its soul to try and win again. Sampson's cheating already ruined one program now he's brought his act to Bloomington. I can't believe for the life of me that rational, educated adults thought he was going to change. They knew what they were getting in bed with and even if this incident doesn't do it, you know its just a matter of time before he gets them in deep.

It is sort of sad to see the proud IU program being dragged through the mud by this apparent scumbag. Sampson has the IU officials making excuses for him and unless he made discreet phone calls to help the assistant who took the fall for him, he is taking others down to save himself. Sad to see IU had to sink so low as to hire this character in order to win.
