Kelvin Sampson (HC Houston Cougars)

Anyone hired will be under Knight's shadow for a long time, as is anyone at UCLA under Wooden's shadow, or at North Carolina under Dean's. Just a reality. Indiana's bball job is a good one, probably always will be. I'm just surprised how quickly this hire was made, and also that it was made before the final four. An incredible amount of networking goes on during this coming weekend!

agreed, coastalbuck. what was the rush at IU to get Kelvin Sampson? was he going somewhere?

good article today on espn.com from Kelvin's perspective - he's thrilled to go to a school where round ball is #1. that means that in the whole state of Indiana there is at least one person pleased with the Sampson hiring...

:tongue2:

Did anyone ever think that IU maybe isn't that lucrative of a job these days?

Who over gets hired will still be under Knight's shadow.

There's no pleasing IU fans unless they hire Pat Knight, Randy Wittman, or Steve Alford and I'd be willing to bet that Sampson could outcoach all of them.

IU fans need to wake up and realize they're NOT North Carolina.

A lot of people said the same thing when we didn't get Gruden, or Belotti, or Urban Meyer, or some other vogue name, and that we had to "settle" for Jim Tressel, because we were the "graveyard of coaches". Who knows, maybe Sampson will do great?

Per Rivals - Three OU Players Released from Letters of Intent

RIVALS (free)

Their release follows on the heels of Kelvin Sampson's departure.

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma on Wednesday released three basketball recruits from national letters of intent they signed when Kelvin Sampson was the Sooners' head coach.
Guard Scottie Reynolds, a McDonald's All-American, and forwards Damion James and Jeremy Mayfield were all granted releases.
''Naturally, it would have been our preference that all of the signees stay with OU, and we exerted considerable energy toward that end,'' Jeff Capel, who was hired as Sampson's replacement last month, said in a statement. ''The releases have been granted, and, while we remain hopeful that these three individuals will wind up as Sooners, we must forge ahead with our program and the young men who aspire to play and excel here.''
Reynolds averaged 27.3 points and 4.7 assists as a senior at Herndon (Va.) High School.
The three were thought to be crucial additions to a team that lost Taj Gray, Kevin Bookout and Terrell Everett, three seniors who combined to score more than half of the Sooners' points last season.
In March, Sampson left Oklahoma after 12 seasons to take over at Indiana. The Sooners went 20-9 last season, losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Sampson replaced Mike Davis, who announced Feb. 16 he was resigning after leading the Hoosiers the past six seasons.

Contract would let IU fire Sampson without obligation
May 8, 2006
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana University would not have to pay any penalty to new basketball coach Kelvin Sampson if the school were to fire him because of NCAA sanctions stemming from recruiting violations while he was at Oklahoma.

The contract Sampson signed April 20 says Indiana "may take further action, up to and including termination" if the NCAA "imposes more significant penalties or sanctions than the University of Oklahoma's self-imposed sanctions."
The Indianapolis Star reported about the final contract on its website Monday, saying it obtained the contract through a public records request.
The provision was not included in the agreement Sampson signed when Indiana decided in March to hire him to succeed Mike Davis.
Since accepting the Indiana job, Sampson has admitted making "mistakes" while at Oklahoma.
The NCAA infractions committee on April 21 heard from Oklahoma officials about more than 550 impermissible calls made between 2000 and 2004 by Sampson and his assistants. A ruling could come within a month, and if Sampson is sanctioned with recruiting restrictions, those penalties could follow him to Indiana.
Oklahoma's self-imposed sanctions, for 2005-06 and 2006-07, included recruiting restrictions and freezing Sampson's salary at $1.01 million.
Under Sampson's contract at IU, he will make $1.1 million in the first year of the seven-year deal and $1.6 million a year after that.
The contract also explicitly states that Sampson is not eligible during his first year for performance bonuses, such as for winning the Big Ten title. It also gives the school the right to fire Sampson without obligation if his assistant coaches commit serious or repeated NCAA rules violations.
