Kellen Winslow Jr. (not a good dude)

If he blew his knee out by a strike to the knee it's worse than by some awkard motion because of the bruising. He probably ripped up his miniscus and his MCL and the deep bruises he most likely has is causing so much swelling they couldn't do an MRI until it subsided a bit. I can't imagine any other way it could be THAT swollen besides smacking it on something and the knee joint just gave way. I tore all 3 and it was pretty swollen but not to the extent that I'm reading about.

If his other injuries weren't cause to have him in a hospital for that long then his knee was probably having some serious circulation problems which is always a big concern if you just tore the shit out of a joint area. I wouldn't be surprised to hear he shattered his knee cap and ruptured his patella tendon also..or a fracture.

The scenario I invisioned is he hit the curb at a high speed and slammed into the handle bars, hitting his knee square on thin metal.

Kellen Winslow's silence has contributed to his becoming a target for fans and pundits...
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>

Links and opinion regarding today's media coverage of the Cleveland Browns...

Based on this morning's newswire, Kellen Winslow's medical status appears to have changed over the last 36 hours from "closely-held secret" to "common knowledge".

With the Associated Press jumping on the torn ACL bandwagon, the day belongs to the numerous (and universally unnamed) sources who have been telling Bernie's Insiders and others that Winslow will need surgery on his knee that will wreck his 2005 season.

With the press converging on what appears to be the sad truth, the Cleveland Browns organization remains mute on Winslow's future, and the Winslow braintrust, including agents Kevin and Carl Poston have offered only deafening silence on the subject of the young tight end's behavior.

The media, like nature, abhors a vacuum and the various columnists and pundits of the Browns and NFL world have rushed in to fill the void.

That group is led by the Plain Dealer's ever-eloquent Bud Shaw, who seems to enjoy waiting to see how the Postons will react now that their negotiating position has evaporated. The Beacon-Journal's Tom Reed jumps into the fray as well, offering his take that the Browns should give Winslow a year to recuperate and then make decisions about his future with the team.

ESPN's Len Pasquarelli, who could undoubtedly find Cleveland on a map if given enough time, also feels the need to weigh in, offering the stunning observation that "Winslow displayed a dearth of common sense" and goes on to mostly bash the player and suggest his comeuppance is nigh. Even the Macon Telegraph sees the opportunity to opine on Winslow.

Browns fans, meanwhile, will get to wait a bit longer for local and national pundits to have something nice to say about the team and its fortunes.

Also on the newswire today is another chapter in the sad tale of Abram Elam, the Kent State defensive back who was scouted heavily by the Browns and later signed by the Miami Dolphins. Unbeknownst to us, David Carducci's scoop on the team's interest in Elam appears to have created a letter-writing campaign directed at the team. Although not currently Browns-related, I felt the story was worthy of linkage given the discussion on the forums following Dave's story.

So, that will be what, 1 td in 3 years for Whineslow ? Well worth the money. :(

Hopefully the Browns have the stones to tell the Postons to return that portion of the Bonus that is due them.

he's a soldier so the browns should waive him for playing 2 games in 2 years.

They have bad drafts every year so why not one more for the road until, the browns become a real team.

just my thoughts, I don't hate the browns when he's not playing:)

I'm sure the $150 fine will really matter to him, as compared to the millions he should lose for getting hurt in violation of his contract.

Police say they will cite Winslow for motorcycle crash

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. will be charged with disregarding safety in the motorcycle crash that put his 2005 season in jeopardy, police said.
Police in suburban Westlake will issue a citation Friday afternoon, Lt. Ray Arcuri said. The charge carries a maximum fine of $150 with no jail time.

Winslow tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee when he crashed, two sources within the league told the Associated Press. An injury such as Winslow's typically requires 10 to 12 months of rehabilitation.

Winslow also sustained unspecified internal injuries when his motorcycle hit a curb at 35 mph and he flipped over the handlebars while practicing in a parking lot near his home May 1.

The Browns have Winslow's medical test results but the club cannot disclose the nature of his injuries because they have not received permission from Winslow or his family.
He spent nine days in the Cleveland Clinic before being released last week. Winslow, who has been resting at home, has not commented on his accident or his injuries.

Winslow, who missed 14 games as a rookie with a broken leg, breached a hazardous activities clause in his contract by riding the motorcycle. The Browns could ask him to return part of the money he already has been paid as part of his six-year, $40 million contract.

Scout.com summarizes the Kellen Winslow situation...
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
An MRI on Kellen Winslow Jr.'s right knee May 18 revealed what had been suspected all along; he has a torn ACL which will require reconstructive surgery to repair. Recovery time is usually 10 to 12 months, which means Winslow would likely be lost for the entire 2005 season.

Winslow was injured in a motorcycle crash May 1, but the swelling was so severe the MRI confirming the tear was not done until 17 days later. The Browns have not announced Winslow's season is finished. If they choose, they could put him on the Physically Unable to Perform list when training camp begins July 29 and delay putting him on I.R. until mid-October.

One reason to make a roster move soon, however, is then the Browns could proceed with recouping more than $5 million in bonuses and salary either already paid or still owed to Winslow for 2005. Riding the motorcycle was a violation of the contract, which opens the door for the Browns to go after the money.

Not only would team owner Randy Lerner be getting a refund on a product that cannot be used, but the Browns would have that money cleared on their salary cap because Winslow was injured in a non-football activity. A player placed on injured reserve under normal circumstances still counts against the salary cap.

Meanwhile, the Browns are moving on. Browns tight ends caught 61 passes last season, and only five of those catches were by Winslow. Steve Heiden led the tight ends with 28 despite missing the first three games with a knee injury. Aaron Shea caught 26 despite not catching any in the first three games and missing a game in December with an ankle injury.

Coach Romeo Crennel acknowledges the Browns will miss Winslow, described by General Manager Phil Savage as a 'blue-chip player,' but there is no time to dwell on not having Winslow available.

"It really doesn't change the system," Crennel said. "I don't think (offensive coordinator) Maurice (Carthon) is going to put in a new offense. The system is the system and it's designed to work with or without any particular player.

"We're going to go forward with what we have. We have some guys already here so it's not like we have to go pull a guy off the street and say 'you have to play tight end'."

Browns' Winslow: 'I humbly apologize'

CLEVELAND (AP) - Kellen Winslow Jr. apologized to Browns fans on Thursday for his reckless use of a motorcycle and confirmed that he will miss the upcoming season because of injuries sustained in the crash.

Winslow tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and suffered unspecified internal injuries on May 1 when he wrecked his high-powered motorcycle while attempting tricks in a secluded parking lot near his home.

For the first time since the crash, Winslow confirmed that he will miss his second season as a pro and acknowledged that it was a mistake to take up motorcycle riding.

"To those members of the Cleveland Browns family who I have disappointed by my decision to ride a motorcycle, I humbly apologize," Winslow said in the statement. "In hindsight it was unwise to attempt to learn to ride a motorcycle without a professional instructor in a controlled environment.

"While many of you are disappointed that I will not be on the field with my teammates for this upcoming season, no one is more disappointed in this fact than me."

Because he broke a dangerous activities clause in his contract, the Browns are expected to seek repayment of between $2 million and $3 million, according to a report on ESPN.com. The report also said the team will withhold a $2 million payment due Winslow, money that is part of his $6 million signing bonus.

The club may restructure Winslow's contract to allow him to make back some of the money he may have to return.

Winslow did not indicate if he will seek a second medical opinion on his knee. Last week, two sources within the league told The Associated Press that Winslow tore his ACL in the accident.

Winslow, who spent nine days at the Cleveland Clinic recovering from injuries in the crash, has been working out at the Browns' training facility in Berea. He has taken part in the team's 11-day passing camp, learning the new playbook and system being installed by Browns first-year coach Romeo Crennel.

Winslow bought the motorcycle on April 9. Westlake Police obtained a surveillance tape that showed him performing "wheelies" on the bike before hitting a curb at 35 mph and flying over the handlebars.

He was charged with disregarding safety, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum fine of $150.

Winslow, a star at the University of Miami, was the sixth overall pick in the 2004 draft. The Browns traded a second-round pick to move up one spot to select the son of Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow Sr.

The club was counting on him to improve their offense last season, but he broke his right leg in Week 2 at Dallas and missed Cleveland's last 14 games. He was still recovering from two operations on his leg at the time of his motorcycle accident.

Good for the Browns Organization.

Hold his feet to the fire and make him read and understand the meaning of the contract he signed on joining their team.

Let's see, given the penchant for bad luck of the "new" Cleveland Browns, Winslow's injuries his first 2 years will slow his development just enough that he won't reach his All-Pro potential until the year after he leaves the Browns via free agency.

Did anyone catch this video footage? Sorry if it has been posted already...

Some interesting tidbits I've grabbed from the HornFan board about this topic:

"21 year olds make mistakes. You made it a circus." And a couple of other comments that make him sound like a total penis wrinkle.
-----------------
I did see the part when he says, "Did I hurt your feelings?" though. Then the reporter tells him no, and Winslow goes into full blown 3rd grader mode with "Well with the way you turned around and walked away it sure looked like I hurt your feelings."
--------------
I've heard they are re-making "Midnight Run " with Taylor and "the soldjah" in the roles of the two mob guys.

Jimmy Serrano: " Is this moron number one? Put moron number two on the phone "
--------------
I heard most of that interview and there is little doubt why Jr is the punk that he is. My goodness, Sr is an idiot.

Q: How will you tell Kellun to handle his rehabilitation?
Sr: I will tell him not to watch TV or read the newspapers...
Q: I am not sure if you understood the question. How will you help him with his rehab...
Sr: I will tell him to not watch TV or read newspapers...
reporter walks away.

Sr: Did I hurt your feelings?

R: no

Sr: You walked away like I hurt your feeling. Did I not give you the answer you wanted? Did you have to wait to long? ...

It was ridiculous how stupid he was.

I guess the best way to approach rehab is to not watch tv or read newspapers. He acts like Jr didn't bring all this crap on himself.

It's pretty fucking disingenuous to sell people tickets to a circus and then say that you don't want a circus.
