Kansas +3.5 at tOSU (ov/un 141.5) Sat 4 CBS

Good point about their seniors. Its tough to have that calming veteran on your team when they keep leaving for the NBA. Its a great reason for the continued success but eventually the well runs dry for leadership. Craft is a good leader but he doesnt seem to have the confidence in his offensive game this year that he had last year.

They played well over their heads in that game.

How?

They lost that game the same reason they lost this one. Putting the ball In the basket....They shot 33%

Matta has to throw the best 5 on the floor to start the game IMO.

Craft
Smith
Ross
DT
Williams

You can't hang onto the "defense" excuse because we just let a team shoot 50% at our place

Yep but second half shooting cost us. It is pretty much feast or famine. I dont think most people disagree with the talent it just isnt typical OSU inside-outside play. They have their moments for sure but against top echelon teams the weaknesses show up more. That's why we debate them when we play these types of teams. What fun would it be if we just watched, said nothing and went on about our way? :osu:

I'm not saying don't debate or anything

I just don't see the point In arguing whether a team Is or Isn't In the top 10 so early Into the season. Seems pointless , Tons of games left.

If you think Ross is one of the best 5, I don't think we were watching the same game...

My fault I thought you were talking about strategy, style of play etc. I would agree they arent top 10 but there isnt a team out there that will have a cakewalks against these Buckeyes.

It's very easy to shoot 50% when you get 30-something attempts 3 feet from the rim. Who is holding onto the defense excuse?

They played well over their heads in that game or maybe Dook played down to them. This team looked shaky against Winthrop and now lose to KU at home. This is a 10 loss team we are looking at here.

I'm ok with it. I don't think they'll lose anyone significant off of this team this year, and if Amir continues to develop, they should be ready to rock next year.

We know DT can shoot, but Craft and Scott specifically need to work on their shooting. Ross just doesn't seem to have his head on straight, and that needs to change because he could be a big contributor. The defense is mostly ok, but still some things to shore up down low with Williams and Ravenel. Speaking of those two...we really need them to show up on both ends on a consistent basis.

How many minutes did he get? In your opinion do you think he got a good feel of the game?

He has to get In the game and get some real minutes. He's not an explosive player where he can just hop off the bench and put In 8 points & then go sit back down. Even If you want to say that , He has the reputation & scouting report of a lights out 3 point shooter. There has to be some kind of offensive threat out there with DT or he's going to see the same type of defense a lot more often.

Opposing teams aren't sweating over Craft , Thompson & Scott shooting 3's all game

I haven't watched all the games ...I've been choosing to watch the Cavs (Insert joke here) over OSU beating up a D3 team. But Ross just looks uncomfortable more than anything. That's what I see

Maybe you guys seen something diff from the other games

My thoughts:

  • We shot 30% from the field, and 25% in the second half, and we lost by 8. This is two games where we've lost by single digits to Top 10 teams despite shooting 20+% worse from the field than they did. Maybe it's just me being naive, but I don't think that we're going to continue to shoot this bad.

  • That being said, we really need to find someone who can be a consistent 3 point shooter. Teams are starting to bring doubles and triples at Deshaun when he gets the ball, and having someone who teams fear for us to kick out to will definitely prevent that.

  • They keep saying they're working on Craft's shooting motion, but I think it's significantly regressed. Now he's got that elbow flared out, and he is rotating his body and jerking his elbow in during his shot, it looks horrid. I don't remember him having that elbow out like that last year.

  • I don't know if Ross just has awful hands, or if he's coming into the game without focusing, but he's got to be able to catch the ball on kick outs. He looked lost out there today.

  • Teams with rim protectors like Withey (luckily the only other one I can think of is Louisville) are going to give us fits because we're not a consistent drive and kick team. I don't think it's something we're going to have to deal with consistently.
I still think that our shot-making will improve and our defense is good enough that we're going to be competitive in the B10. I would predict us as a 6 or 7 loss team.

I don't think we lose more than 5 B1G games. I see us as a 4-seed in the Dance; nothing today indicated to me that we're not a top-15 team.

We had trouble hitting shots today against one of, if not the single, best defensive team(s) in the nation. And Matta kept Ravenel in way too long -- against KU, we needed to see Trey McDonald in there as Amir's relief. Ravenel just got abused by Withey. IMO Matta was badly outcoached by Bill Self.

It's just one game, though, and I'm sure we'll learn from it. We need to find ways to rotate LQR in more when we need points; we just don't have enough shooters to do otherwise, and his D has improved by leaps and bounds (it may have surpassed DeShaun's at this point). But this Buckeye team still has lots of talent, and there's lots of time to gel between now and March.
