Buchanan is doing his share to boost the Buckeyes through the Big Ten. On the year, Buchanan has punted 50 times, averaging 41.3 yards per punt, with a long of 60 yards. He has placed 20 punts inside the 20 yard line.
Of those 50 punts, only one has resulted in a touchback.
Fickell said the punt team has impressed him so far.
"(Special teams has) done an unbelievable job. Punt unit especially. Ben (Buchanan) has sacrificed a lot of things as far as numbers-wise," Fickell said on Oct. 25. "When you're punting into the 40 yard line into the wind at Illinois, to punt that thing 19 yards, gave it to them on the 11 yard line."
Buchanan has only had one punt blocked on the year, and that was against Toledo on Sept. 10.
Fickell spoke about the importance of special teams after OSU's win over Wisconsin on Oct. 29. In OSU's 33-29 victory over Wisconsin, the Buckeyes blocked a punt to set up a one-yard touchdown run from Hall.
"We had to make some plays and create momentum on the special teams," Fickell said after the Wisconsin game. "Blocked punt is a huge, huge thing. The special teams really played well in every other aspect of the game."

Thanks to his missionary work deep in the jungles of Honduras, punter Ben Buchanan has learned the value of helping others and developed a deep appreciation of the many positive things in his life

First there was the long plane trip to Honduras. Then there was the long, bumpy ride in the back of a truck. Then came the five-hour paddle up river in a canoe. Make that a dugout canoe.
What an adventure. Except that when Ben Buchanan made that trek with his physician father Tim Buchanan and others two years ago, it wasn?t some exotic all-inclusive odyssey they?d found at a travel site on the internet.
They were part of a team of family care physicians and dentists, including go-fers such as Ben, whose faith-based mission was to deliver health care to people deep in the tropical jungle. Ben?s job was to help carry as much gear as possible, to help set up and tear down their portable medical center, to distribute pills from the pharmacy, and to otherwise spread goodwill with the children by playing Frisbee, tossing a football or baseball, or just playing chase.
In other words, his job was to be a Good Samaritan, something that more and more seems to be the part that Ben Buchanan ? Ohio State?s junior punter ? was born to play.
?As I like to say, Ben is the Tim Tebow of college punters,? OSU teammate Tyler Moeller said. ?He is just a sincerely good guy.?

The redshirt senior out of Westerville Central has been working towards a career in professional football since he first took up punting at a young age, but if that doesn?t work out, Buchanan has plenty of other options.
?There?s a number of things I?d look at,? Buchanan said as he prepares for his final season with the Ohio State football team.
?I love my communications background. I?d be very interested in being a college athletic director one day like Mr. (Gene) Smith. I think he does an excellent job. Being able to run a university is a very complex thing in itself.?

Ben Buchanan is in his third year as the Buckeyes? punter, but to describe him as primarily a football player would be a disservice to him. Buchanan is a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete who was a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Award, which is based on athletic performance, academics and community service. Among his community-service projects was a medical mission to Honduras after his freshman year.
Question: Are you hoping to be nominated for the Wuerffel Award again?
Answer: I am. It was really an honor I was selected to be semifinalist. That award was truly a blessing to be nominated for. It really speaks to the things I strive to be.
Q: I know how important community service is to you. Have you taken any interesting trips or undertaken any projects since the end of last season?
A: I was down in Florida for spring break to visit my grandmother. My girlfriend and I went down there for the week. We got to put hurricane stripping on homes for the local Habitat for Humanity. I?m in grad school, so I don?t have as much time for long community service endeavors, like full mission trips for a week. But any chance I have to give back, through hospital visits or Habitat for Humanity, that?s a passion of mine.

But, is there a reason Ben takes 3 steps on his kicks? How have coaches not gotten on him about his release time? Way too slow.
Bucky Katt;2243677; said:But this isn't anything new. If it's not fixed by now, that's all on the coaches.
