Ravens release Steve Hauschka
Posted by Michael David Smith on November 17, 2009

The Baltimore Ravens have waived kicker Steve Hauschka, officially making a move that's only surprising because it didn't happen sooner.

Hauschka missed his fourth field goal of the season on Monday night, a 36-yard attempt that went wide left. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said after the game that he talked to Hauschka, and that the kicker knew he was on thin ice.

"We've been evaluating the kicking position," Harbaugh said. "Steve and I had a great talk on Tuesday night, and he'll be the first to tell you that he needs to kick better than that. He kicks better than that in practice and he's kicked better in games up until this point. He just didn't do the job tonight and I think he knows that."

Said Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, "Every one of our players has to step up to a Ravens' level of play and that was not happening for Steve right now."

It's unclear who the Ravens' next kicker will be, but former Jets kicker Mike Nugent and former Cowboys kicker Billy Cundiff worked out for the team last week, and Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times tweets that they're the top candidates.

Source: Cards to work out two kickers
By Adam Schefter
ESPN

With Neil Rackers nursing a mildly strained groin, the Arizona Cardinals will spend part of their Thanksgiving working out kickers.

Free-agent kickers Mike Nugent and Matt Bryant, each of whom has auditioned unsuccessfully in recent weeks, are scheduled to work out for the Cardinals on Thursday, a league source said.

But it is more of a precaution than anything. Rackers is still expected to be healthy enough to kick in Sunday's key game against the Tennessee Titans.

NY Giants make practice-squad transactions
By Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
December 01, 2009

Chris Faytok/The Star-LedgerLinebacker Kenny Ingram (right), shown here joking with linebacker Michael Boley during training camp, is back with the Giants as a member of the team's practice squad.
6:43 p.m. UPDATED with full workout list. See below.

The Giants brought in a pair of four kickers for tryouts Tuesday but signed neither none of them.
The four kickers brought in for a workout Wednesday were former Jet and Buc Mike Nugent, Sam Swank, Graham Gano and Steve Hauschka. Gano had been playing in the UFL while Hauschka was cut recently by the Ravens. Swank's workout was his second with the Giants in a few weeks, as he kicked for them during the bye week.

The Giants were looking for kickoff specialists despite the fact Lawrence Tynes has helped them to a 10th overall ranking on opposing kick returns. Tynes is also coming off a game in which he hit a 52-yard field goal - his longest as a Giant. Plus, he has six touchbacks this season, which puts him on pace to match his career-high of eight, set in 2007

'Skins will check out four kickers on Tuesday
Posted by Mike Florio on December 7, 2009

Earlier today, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Redskins would be bringing in multiple kickers for a look-see this week, after Shaun Suisham missed a 23-yarder that likely would have clinched a win over the unbeaten Saints.

Schefter had the name of one contender -- Graham Gano. Per Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, the other three are Shane Andrus, Nick Novak, and Mike Nugent.

Presumably, one of them will get the job and Suisham will get the shoe.

lets hope he replaces rackers. Its sad that he had to be on two terrible teams. Finally put him on a decent team and see what happens

I don't see what the quality of team has to do with his kicking...as long as the place-kick team does its job (snap, hold, blocking) it doesn't mean squat what the offense and defense does. Nuge still has to put foot-to-ball...
