K Jayden Fielding (All B1G, National Champion)

All well and good, but what he did in the CFP is the minimum that he's supposed to do. The only reason it's being recognized is because of how he crapped the bed in The Game. Surely, we're planning to bring in some competition when the portal is open.
In regards to "the minimum that he's supposed to do," please explain what he could have done, more. He was 4 for 5 in the playoffs, missing just the 50+ yarder against Tennessee. I don't remember that kick, but it doesn't seem to be important to the way the game ended. He was 2/2 against Oregon, but I don't think either kick was very important. 0/0 against Texas, so... no comment there. But 2/2 against Notre Dame, and those were both important. One was 30-39 yards and one was 40-49 yards. What else could / should he have done in that game? Or any of the other games?

And I get it - we're OHIO STATE. A kicker SHOULD make both of those kicks against Notre Dame. A kicker SHOULD make all of his extra point attempts (and that's why I didn't mention it in the first paragraph). But, aside from making the Tennessee game 45-17 instead of 42-17, what else are you expecting from your kicker in the playoffs?

(Note that I'm just talking about the playoffs. If you're talking about regular season - mostly The Game - then I can see what you're talking about.)

@Zurp Missed a field goal against Nebraska in a game where it making it mattered. And against Marshall he kicked 3 kickoffs in a row out of bounds, which was one of the weirdest things I have seen. Other than those 2 games, in addition to The Game, he was solid.

So... you bring up good points. But, the original point was "what he did in the CFP". And the point that he did the "minimum" is valid, but I also think he did the "maximum" (minus the FG attempt against Tennessee) in the CFP.
But you have good points. He missed a field goal against Nebraska. But, it never should have come to the field goals against Nebraska. Same with the cheaters - it never should have come to field goals. It did, and he didn't do his job in those games. So, both he and the offense failed in those games.

I was at the Marshall game, and that was weird. On one hand, it was just against Marshall. So it didn't hurt. But on the other hand, that really shouldn't happen... in the national championship game or against the shlubs. Or any other game.

Fair enough. After reading your posts, I agree that min/max may not be the right metric. What I meant was that what he did in the CFP was simply what he's supposed to do. Five for 5 with one of them being from 50 would be better, but 4 for 5 and missing a 50 should be what's at least expected at tOSU. The fucking skunkweasels went out and found a boomer. There's no reason that we shouldn't have a kicker like that. Maybe there's some reticence that they won't get as many FG attempts with us? That seems like kind of a reach, but who knows? I think it's just been neglected. When you need a kicker, you really need him. That alone should warrant recruiting emphasis both HS and portal.

His CFP miss wasn’t just from 50, it was from 56 yards in about 20-degree weather. It hooked and was well short, and was only tried because it was the last play of the first half, but that would have been pure bonus points from a college kicker.

The 2 misses in The Game, of course, were unacceptable. Gotta hit over 80% of kicks like those.

Ohio State Kicker Jayden Fielding Confident and Healthy After Battling Through Hip Injury in 2024

155846_h.jpg

Jayden Fielding’s struggles during the regular season last year suddenly became more understandable when the Ohio State kicker met with the media last week.

Fielding revealed last week that he tore an adductor muscle in his right hip – his kicking leg – during Ohio State’s third game of last season against Marshall. That injury led to Fielding hitting three straight kickoffs out of bounds and ultimately being replaced for the remainder of that game by walk-on kicker Austin Snyder. But Fielding returned for Ohio State’s subsequent game against Michigan State and handled the Buckeyes’ kicking duties for the rest of the year even though he was still injured.

Despite that injury, Fielding did his job effectively for the most part in 2024, making eight of his nine field goal attempts in Ohio State’s first 11 games of the season. But he became a pariah in Columbus when he missed two field goals inside of 40 yards against Michigan, directly leading to Ohio State’s 13-10 loss in The Game.

Fielding said there was a lot of “trial and error” in learning how to kick with an injured hip, which affected his confidence and ultimately led to his costly misses in the rivalry game. But with Ohio State having no other kickers on scholarship, Fielding fought through the injury all year long.

“Didn't make it too easy trying to kick any names in those games, but I did my best to help the team out,” Fielding said.
In the end, Fielding figured out how to kick through that injury well enough to help Ohio State win a national championship. After coming up short on a 55-yard field goal against Tennessee – which would have been a tough kick even if he was healthy given the cold, windy conditions in

Ohio Stadium for the Buckeyes’ College Football Playoff opener – Fielding made all four of his field goal attempts in the team's final three games of the CFP, including a pair of 46-yard kicks and a 33-yard field goal with just 26 seconds to play that clinched the Buckeyes’ national championship win over Notre Dame.

I guess...
But we didn't have another kicker? One who wasn't hurt?

Austin Snyder kicked off 3 times

Ohio State Overview
• Austin is in his second season with the Ohio State program
• He enrolled in classes at Ohio State in June of 2023 after transferring from the University of Findlay

More on Austin
• Austin played three seasons at Findley where he was coached by Rob Keys, who currently is a special teams quality control coach for the Buckeyes
• Appeared in 29 games for the Oilers betweem 2020-22
• Made 31 of 40 career field goals with a long of 51 yards and was 105 of 111 on extra points
• Named first-team All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) in 2022 after making 15 of 20 field goals; the 15 field goals made set a Findley and GMAC record

And THAT is exactly the problem. I respect that he tried to work through it. Been there and that's baller, BUT tOSU shouldn't have to rely on a guy working through "a lot of “trial and error” in learning how to kick with an injured hip". That's poor special teams planning that degenerated into gross negligence when it caused the scum loss. We should have a string of kickers like we have QBs.

In a perfect world yes, but I remember times in the past several years where we didn't have a viable backup if QB1 went down. That being said they should have no problem finding an above average kicker in the portal to make sure there are at least 2 kickers on the roster at all times. I'd be fine with someone that is automatic from 40 in even if that's as far as they can kick.
