Willoughby should be given a chance at the job. Nuernberger was 13/20 (65%) on field goals last year, 8/10 from 20 to 29 yards, and only 5/10 from 40 to 49 yards. FG kicking was a big weakness on 2014, and an unreliable kicker could cost a team a national championship (just ask Bobby Bowden).

Or could see Sean handle from mid range on in and any long distance FG's will go to Jack.

It goes without saying that I have no inside knowledge to support this theory but I wondered last year if Das Boot wasn't taking his spot a little for granted and when I saw that Willoughby had been brought over I wondered if Urban hadn't seen the same thing. Nothing to be done about it during the year, but nothing wrong with generating some competition at a potentially crucial spot.

Agreed. They are probably just trying to avoid complacency by adding competition.

It could be argued that the standards last season in terms of placekicking were not where they needed to be, and that's not an unusual occurrence when relying on a freshman kicker.

Sean Nuernberger hit 13-20 field goal attempts for the Buckeyes last year, but he went just 5-10 from 40 yards and beyond. Senior Jack Willoughby transferred in from Duke to be Ohio State's kickoff specialist, but he has also provided some tremendous competition for the starter's job on placements.

In fact, right now it seems to be a complete toss up as to who will be kicking field goals and extra points this season for the Buckeyes.

"He’s been a pleasant surprise," special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs said of Willoughby. "It’s good to have competition at every position. It’s good to have maturity. He’s a four-year player from Duke. He graduated No. 1 in his class. He brings maturity. That’s all a benefit. My guess is we’re going to keep kicking until game day and one of them’s going to trot out there and kick the first field goal and we’ll see how it goes."

Does being first in his class make him too smart to coach?

"Well, for me it is," Coombs joked. "I’m surely not coaching him on economics, which is what his degree was in. It’s great because he’s living with Pat Elflein and Taylor Decker, so it tells you that he’s right in the culture of our team. Right in there with the right guys and the right culture, which is a good thing for Jack."

Jacoby Boren and Jack Willoughby are part of an 11-1 football team, but they're also getting it done in the classroom.

Willoughby handled all of the kicking responsibilities for the Buckeyes for the first nine games of the season. Despite never attempting a field goal until this year, Willoughby is 7-of-11 in that department plus has made a Big Ten-best 45-of-45 extra points.
