Just did a phone job interview...

BuckeyeNation27

Goal Goal USA!
Former FF The Deuce Champ
OK, so a position opened up within the company but out in Dallas. I sent in the resume, but wasn't 100% clear on the specs of the job. During the interview I find out it's 100% sales related. I went to school for computers/IT/business.........and I am NOT a salesperson by any stretch of the imagination. I know, you're saying "but BN27, dropping F bombs every other second and ranting about NDs schedule is perfect salesmenship"......somehow this doesn't translate well to the business world.

Anyway......I'm one of 6 people applying for the job. The job I do now deals with computers, but is in the sales division of my company, so this new job is the next step up. But seriously.........I suck as a salesman. I'm Tommy Calahan in Tommy Boy. Here's the question:

Do I take the next step and eventually the job if offered......a job that would move me to Texas where I know 0 people within about a billion mile radius, knowing full well that I suck as a salesman? Should I quit my whining and learn how to be a salesman even though that's not what I went to school for, nor is it really what I want to do?

PS, don't tell the girlfriend......she doesn't know yet :2004:

I'm sure different people will have different answers, all I can say is what I would do in your place. Fuck no, don't go. First of all, Texas sucks. Second of all, most sales jobs suck. Third, you'd be doing a job you (admittedly) suck at, which means you'll be living in a strange place (that sucks) without your girlfriend doing a job you hate and may well fail at and get fired. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

I wouldn't do it but that's just me.

You answered the question yourself by saying you aren't a trained salesman and don't want to do it.

I would trust your career future to the result of a BP poll.

OK, seriously, I would get a sheet of paper, and make 2 columns on it. One has the reasons for taking a sales job in Dallas, the other the reasons against. I've found that making the list forces me to realize just what the most important factors are in important decisions. One side may only have 2 reasons, and the other side 10 reasons, but if the 2 reasons are very important to you, that can be the correct decision.

I also sucked at sales.

Sales isn't tough, if you believe in what your selling. I've sold crap financial products and sucked because I wouldn't do it and wouldn't sell it to a family member. Not sure what the extent of the sales are, but if you believe in the products and services, it becomes a natural/easy sell.

I also have to vote no. For years I've tried to convince myself that I should go into sales - idiots who are good at selling widgets make great money. But I can't bring myself to do it, because I know I'd hate it, and the increased compensation isn't worth it to me. I think if sales isn't in you, it never will be, and you'd be miserable.

And Texas !?!?!?!? Yeah. Steers and queers.

Perhaps I should explain why this isn't exactly a no brainer. I still live in the same town I grew up in. And I hate it. I need to get out. I'm also not making enough money to support my addiction to spending $100-$200+ on sporting events (along with car/student loan/phone/cc/.......).

Anybody got a nice computer job in the Columbus area for me? That would be perfect. (And please don't go looking in the want ads.....I feel bad enough making people give me advice. I don't want to make you look for jobs for me too :!

Don't take it if you're not comfortable with doing it, or if you have to keep it secret from your girlfriend, the commute alone will kill you. Not knowing anyone has never been a deterrent for me, but going into something that I either know I'm not good at, or am pretty sure that I would hate, would keep me from doing that. If you don't think that you're cut out for sales, then you're probably right. I am a technical guy that hated how cut throat sales could be, when I gave it a shot. Having said all that. If you think you can handle it, and grow to like it, and the money's better, then go for it. If you think that it'll be a struggle and you're considering going to "the next step" because that's what's expected, then pass. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Be a real Buckeye... take the job on the condition you get 50 yard line tickets for the game in Austin next year

Seriously though, don't do it. I took a job I thought was out of my realm but it was a possible next step with great salary and benefits (company car, annual trip to Vegas for a "seminar" and loads of travel). Within a year I got fired because the promised 6 month training was cut into 1 month and they wondered how I fucked up something they didn't train me on.

This was 4 years ago in the toughest job market around. Was jobless for 8 months and had to take a lesser job to get back into accounting. The problem is now looking for new jobs they keep asking back to that 8 month gap and I have yet to get back to where I was before I took the job.

Isn't that your answer?

Being a salesperson really is a tough job and what makes it even worse is when it is something you don't enjoy. Forget about what extra money you might be making, look at how unhappy you will likely be at it. You also have to look at the costs associated with moving down there on top of the fact that if you are as bad a salesperson as you have stated, you will probably not be able to keep the job.

Good luck man!

You may also want to check if BP is blocked by that company's firewall!

If so, no brainer.

On the positive side. Even though I also believe that Texas sucks as a whole. Dallas, and the surrounding areas are very nice. If I had to move to Texas, it would be Dallas, which is also the perfect place to root for the Raiders, I hear.
