Spend today installing a new kitchen sink, faucet and garbage disposal. The disposal was the worst part.
Quit your bragging... I could do the same project... it'd only take me a couple days... OK, a week... "Hun, where's that damn How-To-Do-It-Yourself book again... Yes dear, we'll call Roy if it's not done by February..."

Listen, I am completely non-handy and it was not that difficult. The worst part is my back is sore today from being under the sink for 4 hours.

I'm looking forward to finishing my basement in a few years, or as soon as we have some money. The biggest thing that worries me is that we seem to live in a low area and the sump pump runs about twice an hour. I definitely need to look into a battery back up for the sump pump before I worry about finishing the basement. Does anyone know how a computer UPS would work for that?
I also think we will need a shed or something in the back once we get a mower and anything else for the yard. The garage is barely big enough for both cars so we can't put anything else into it.
So far the only work I've done was to put a power outlet into the cabinet in the kitchen so I could plug in the microwave, installed a hanging pot rack to clear out some of the limited cupboard space, ran the water hose for the fridge, and cleaned out some of the gutters. My fiance wants to paint the lower bathroom before we have a party on the 28th.

Hawg,

I know a buddy of mine whose basement flooded last year after the ice storm b/c his sump pump quit. Their electric was out for about 4 days.

Now he has a home security system and if the electric goes out, the company calls him so he knows his sump pump isn't working.

The bad thing about basements where sump pumps are needed, even if you have a back up, it's only going to last 6-8 hours until it quits and if you are out of town, you're screwed. That's when a generator is needed.

A neighbor can just gas it up for you and keep it running.

Just giving you a worst case scenario here.

I think a generator would be a good invesment first of all.

Definitely get some kind of back up for the sump pump... when I lived up north we lost power during a storm and it flooded out basement... I was in the process of finishing the basement and lost some materials I had down there... it happened in the middle of the night so I didn't even know what was going on until the morning.... insurance covered most of it and actually paid to have a professional service to come in and clean it up but it was such a pain in the ass.

I'd probably look into that as well, but we probably couldn't afford more than a gas generator right now, which isn't going to help if we're out of town. My dad just installed a natural gas generator that will basically automatically power the whole house if the power goes out. It was out for nearly a whole day on the 5th of July 2 years ago. I don't see any water damage in the basement now so hopefully the power is pretty reliable. Noted in the month that we've owned the house the weather has been really wet so hopefully it isn't this bad all the time. I'm going to hook up my current computer UPS to see how long it will run the sump to see how powerful of a UPS I should get. Even if I don't get a generator right now a UPS should power the sump long enough that I could run over to Walmart and buy a generator before it floods.

Sheds are great. I never had one until this house and now cannot imagine not having one. Even if I had an extra stall in the garage I would like a separate building. Just check with the local town to see if there are restrictions as to size and placement.

Hey, give people markers to write on the bathroom walls before you paint it. It is something fun to do and you can take photos of the everything before you paint over it.

Wouldn't you be worried about the back-up getting wet or just collecting enough moisture to be ruined and not work at all?

I would put it high enough on the wall that it would take forever to get wet. The basement doesn't have a lot of moisture outside of the sump pump. I just figure it would be cheaper to buy a UPS than a new sump pump with a backup when the current sump pump is perfectly good. I just wonder how long a UPS will be able to power a sump pump for 2 20 second bursts an hour?

Makes sense I guess. I bet it'll give you a couple of hours, I'll say 3.5...:) Dude you make this a crackhead vbet of how long it'll run the pump.
