June Jones (official thread)

June Jones Decision - Off to SMU (ESPN)

June Jones will be introduced at a 4 p.m. ET news conference today as the head coach at SMU.

Earlier, Jones' agent, Leigh Steinberg, confirmed that Jones had agreed to a 5-year deal worth about $2 million per year.
On Sunday, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad that SMU was close to finalizing the details of a contract for Jones. The source said the deal is expected to be booster-funded. SMU athletic director Steve Orsini reportedly has sold as many as 20 boosters on the concept of donating as much as $100,000 per year for five years.

A tidbit from the Frazier-fired article on Yahoo:

Former Michigan State coach John L. Smith, who runs a wide-open offense similar to Jones', is among those being considered for the Hawaii job.
Not noted in the article is Hawaii's apparent desire to average twelve penalties a game and hand WAC superiority back to Boise and Fresno.

Good for him.

If the facilities and broken promises are as bad as they say they are down there in Hawaii, then it's probably in Jones' best interest to get to a place where he can get more support in return for his efforts.

He brought Hawaii to national prominence. They should thank him and wish him luck.

Exclusive Transcript of June Jones Interview at SMU - EDSBS

(Scene: a nattily dressed man with a bourbon gut enter the room from a hidden door. Visible through the door: a bed with silk sheets streaming off it and onto the floor, a woman’s naked legs seen to the knee. Ed “the Scrapple King” Pestara zips his expensive pants.)
Ed: Hey, baby. Don’t clean up. I like you walking around smelling claimed. Other men smell it on you like monkeys and back off. Or like Meerkats.
Woman, from the other room: Okay, King.
Ed: And stay out of here while the men are talking. Take the back stairs and go buy yourself a smoothie. Low-carb, though. I don’t want you gettin’ cottage cheesey on me.
Woman: Okay, baby.
(Ed’s secretary pops her head in the door. She is a stunning Latina with a skin-tight black skirt on and a white oxford shirt open down to ample cleavage.)
Secretary: Coach Jones is here to see you.
Ed: Send him in.
Secretary: Certainly, sir.
Ed: And when we’re done…you feel like playing a little border patrol, senorita?
Secretary: Only if I get to turn the tables on you this time. When you’re on my side of the border, it’s strictly Mexican rules only.
Ed: I’ll charge the taser, then. Send him in.
:slappy:
Ed: I’ll be damned. You got me, Spunky Brewster. I like visionary shit, Jones. You’re my man. Care for some scotch?
June: No thank you, sir.
Ed: Blow?
June: No, again, I appreciate it, but…
Ed: Scotch made with blow? Some scotch-scented cocaine? You see, you have to smell it to get the scotch aroma, and when you do, WOOO! It’s all the way up to Bonerland, Jones!
June: No, I’m fine.
Ed: Spectacular. I’m gonna take a little of all three and Luisa in the back room. Care to join us?
June: No, I’m just gonna…
Ed: Get plowed by a body-dysmorphic personal trainer bean queen with a meth problem and fake tanner? You go right ahead. We accept everything but losing here at SMU, even pickleticklers with a home on the range fetish like yourself.
June: I’m gonna change into some clothes.
Luisa: Wanna see the right one again?
June: Yes, please.
(She does. It is indescribable.)

Actually there's some talk of Chang possibly returning as QB's coach should/when Jones takes over. Timmy is currently the OC at Jackson State.

Interesting question regarding Mariota. He was a late bloomer who had a solid returning QB (ended up signing with Utah State and finished at Hawaii) in front of him until his senior year in high school. Jones is known for bringing in a lot of QB's so he would've given Marcus a better look than the UH staff did at that time. Mariota's high school QB coach is tight with Jones, so there's that to consider as well. At the very least, Mariota would have looked at UH a lot harder had Jones been there. But, outside of that national championship thing, I'd say things worked out pretty good for him at Oregon.

Serious Q though, would Marcus Mariota have stayed on the islands if June Jones had never left?
Don't think so. Hawaii didn't even offer him, and he was a 3-star per Rivals. He was in the 2011 class, and Norm Chow didn't become the Hawaii head coach until Dec 2011 when Mariota was already at Oregon. Had Chow been the coach a few years earlier, he may have been able to con Mariota into staying on-island. I don't think that June Jones would've even looked at Mariota.

EDIT: Just noticed that 808 had posted before me, and he knows more about the climate of accessing local kids...defer to this opinion.
