July Honeymoon Location Advice

Also, an awesome site to check out places is www.tripadvisor.com - Very candid reviews and also forums so you can find out about everything you need to know.

that site is a good reference, but try not to put too much stock in the reviews. They are pretty snobby. I've stayed at some great hotels in DC and Sydney and in California which people on tripadvisor "ding" for not having a coffee maker, the carpet being "old" or the room being "small", none of which that I noticed. Maybe I will notice such things when I'm 40.

I am not going to tell you to stay away from Hawaii, but I will give you a very serious warning.

If you find a Tiki doll that looks anything like this, DO NOT !!!!! pick it up. Bad stuff will happen to you. You may find yourself with a Taratula crawling on you, have a bad surfing accident, or god forbid get lost in a cave and run into Vincent Price.

What I am saying is avoid the Tiki if you go there.

That right there is some good advice.

Here is where my wife and I honeymooned back in 1993. We love mountain views, and the view from our suite was awesome. We hardly ever left, but when we did there were plenty of things to do for entertainment. It's a lot cheaper than what you're willing to spend, but you can save the money and go on a cruise later on when it's not hurricane season. Like BB said, there's no point in going to some exotic location when you're just going to be in the bedroom the whole time anyway.

Hurricane season really starts in Aug (that's not to say one cannot come in July)... I wouldn't be too concerned about a hurricane. If it is a big concern go south (as in Aruba), they tend to stay in the Florida, Puerto Rico, Cuba, etc. area (aka northern Caribbean).

If you don't want much to do Tortola is your place (I was bored out of my mind... there really isn't much of anything on the island). (That isn't a knock, some folks like to veg on the beach... I'm good for a couple hours of veg. time until I need to get out and "do something").

It will be hot at that time of year, however the Caribbean islands tend to get a nice breeze. St. Thomas has the best "high end" shopping of all the islands (if that's important), as long as you stay away from downtown (where the cruise ships dock), there really aren't too many folks at the resorts.

Puerto Rico is fun, San Juan has population... if getting away from people is important, it might not be the best spot.

Aruba is the Vegas of the Caribbean. If you like to gamble, and like night life it is a good spot (not too many folks either). airfare can be pricey to get down to Aruba (it is right off the coast of South America... and is the southern most Caribbean island).

St. John is roughly 90% national forest, so it is very natural (and great snorkel/scuba :wink2: )

The Bahamas are similar to Florida, and flights are reasonable.

I'm told Key West is a hoot... never been there though.

We went to Hawaii (my wife insisted on Hawaii... she had her mind made up before we began talks of where to go). Flights are expensive, however you can find deals from Cali to Hawaii (then just book southwest to Cali). It was nice, the flight was 12 hours from Columbus to Hawaii, although we did have two short layover in Chicago and San Fran... Hawaii was paradise. my only complain was the 6 hour time change (the nice thing about the Caribbean is no time change), and the long flight. If (more like when) we go out to Hawaii next time, we'll stay in Cali overnight on the way over and back... it would help break up the time changes. Also, if you go to Hawaii, you need at least 10 days (I'd suggest two weeks). It takes a day to get there, a day to get back, and a day or two to adjust while over there. After factoring in travel days and adjustment days, 10 days is really less than a week of good vacation time.

Travelzoo.com has good deals to Europe. I have family that has gone to Greece, Italy, and Ireland for their honeymoon (three different couples). They all liked it (none are into beaches). You might be looking at a min. of $3k to really do it right for two people though... if it is of interest, shop around, you could find it does meet your price range.

Cruises are great... although prob. not the best for honeymoon's. When you're on the ship, you cannot get away from other people unless you stay in your cabin. You do get good food (all inclusive except for drinks), good entertainment, and several islands to bum around/hit the beach each day (good for folks that like something different each day). Again fun for a vacation, prob. not the best for a honeymoon due to a lack of "privacy."

I've never been to Jamaica. I've heard it's a nice place (it seems to be popular with honeymooners... I cannot tell you how many friends have gone there for their honeymoon... lots).

In the US, Nappa Valley is a great place (drink wine each day, and the views are great as well). Key West can be fun (or any part of Florida with a beach  ).

I hope this helps...

Try Scandals, I mean Sandals resorts (all-inclusive dealie), they are all VERY nice, decent food, friendly atmosphere. Went to the Royal Caribbean Sandals resort in Jamaica for my honeymoon last June, unfortunately it was the first hurricane of the season so it rained 3/4's of the time. If you do go to Jamaica you should at least walk up the Dunn River Falls near Ocho Rios, but prepare to have everything you are carrying and wearing get soaked.

we did the Dunns River Falls trip. Some kid had knocked backa few before the trip and wiped out hard. He cracked his cheek on a rock and had an instant welt and some swelling.

It's funny. You go up in a big group each holding someone's hand, and you'll need to pull people up/get pulled up. It's actually a little tough if you don't have good balance. But the trip guides just scurry right on up like tropical sherpas.

If you're not obsessed with really warm weather and since you're not on a monster budget, parts of upstate New York, the Thousand Islands, or Vermont could be really nice. You could do the stereotypical stop at Niagara Falls too depending on how you go. I'd recommend Maine to anyone but it would be really crowded in July and is expensive as well.

Aruba will never get a bloody cent from me considering the way they've botched the Natalee Holloway case.

That's absolutely KILLED their tourism income.

Hurricanes won't be a problem, most hit in Late August, early September. July should pose no problem.

No matter the temperature, there's always a nice sea breeze to cool you down.

Last year when we were checking locations there was a Hurricane the first week in June that passed by the Mayan Riviera & Cancun but never landed. But it still screwed up the weather while you were there.

My wife and I went to St. Lucia for our (March) honeymoon in '02. We stayed at Stonefield Villas which was very nice, though not right 'on the beach' and not a mega 'all inclusive' resort. The ocean is pretty deep around St. Lucia, so there aren't as much azure waters that one might find around other islands. It was a great trip though, and all told w/ airfare, food and lodging was around $3k for 8 days or so.

For a July honeymoon, considering the tropical heat, have you considered someting like a Euro honeymoon? Or perhaps a Canadian Rockies trip? I've heard Banff is amazing, also Glacier NP in the states and Yellowstone, etc. (thought Yellowstone would be a zoo in July, unless you get way off the beaten path).

Hard to beat a fruity drink on a beach, though...

Yes, I drink fruity drinks in the tropics. :p

So you can prob. get a good price... all the more reason to actually go down there :wink2:

Any of the islands (and Mexico or the other south american countries) will be like aruba, in regards to the police (the nice thing, is they can be bought off if they catch you doing something stupid... ie pissing on a wall in a back alley while ripped at four in the morning :wink2: )
