Josh Brent (official thread)

Taos, I agree, why would a big-time recruit choose Illinois over tOSU?
Illinois football has history and tradition of its own, you know. Why not be proud of your home state university... and why not buy into the idea of resurrecting that pride and tradition from its recent slumber?

Thad Matta springs to mind. . .

. . . OK, so maybe the parallel is not quite apt... but there are definitely selling points present, and the Zooker is smart enough to make ample use of them.

Ofcourse, the Illini have a great program that can only get better and what kid wouldn't want to go to the home state college, but overall I see OSU as a better overall choice, but Illinois has some selling points that are better than some of OSU's.

Yeah, I know... the problem with that argument is that the Illini's greatness was too far back for today's prospects to really relate. I only know the bare minimum of Illinois' history (not much beyond Red Grange, Dick Butkus, and the rivalry with OSU), but I do respect their history--as well as the talent to be found in the Chicago area (not to mention other areas in the midwest). If the Zooker can tap the talent pool (and maybe hire outstanding assistants to run the team for him ), Illinois could start to make a lot of noise in coming years.

...All he has to do is work some verbal magic with some impressionable youngsters...

despite? I think you get that feeling from reading the reports.

What I was getting at was that most people seem to think from the reports done on these players that the schools like Michigan, Notre Dame, or Ohio State are in the lead for these guys, but judging by the actions of the players it seems like Illinois could be the real favorite for their services.

They could choose to carry on the tradition of recruits coming out of IL and staring at tOSU. I know there is quite a list, Tomsik comes to mind. I think we even had a Heisman campain for an Il. guy whose career ended in a medical.

I think you are right...Illinois is going to be a real player for Brent, Hughes and Wilson before it is all said and done. They have also offered and are acticely pursuing Justin Siller, Dale Martin, Devonte Campbell, Charles Brown, Julian Miller, Steve Matas, Antonio Jeremiah, Ryan Wheat, Alex Delisi, LeBron Daniel, Jermale Hines, Otis Merrill, Sean Cattouse, David Arnold, Diaunte Morrow, CJ Peake, Skylar Jones and Victor Reynolds...all of whom have expressed interest in OSU and all of whom Illinois has at least a chance of landing. I am sure that Zook is selling the "come to Illinois and help me turn things around" to Brent, Hughes and Wilson.

Judging from his time at FLorida, Zook is a great recruiter, but not a very good coach. He had all the talent in the world in Gainesville but could not seem to get it together on the field.
