EUREKA -- The University of Illinois had an assistant football coach and assistant track coach on hand to watch Josh Brent Tuesday night.
The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Brent showed them his talents are not limited to flattening opposing linemen or heaving the shot put.
He can play basketball, too.
Brent scored eight points in a pivotal fourth-quarter surge, part of a 15-point, seven-rebound second half which sparked Central Catholic High School to a 66-58 Corn Belt Conference victory over Eureka.
Brent finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds as the Saints, ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press Class A state poll, improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Corn Belt.
?I saw some openings that I didn?t see in the first half. They were playing me pretty tough (in the first half),? said Brent, who has narrowed his college choices to Illinois, Ohio State and Michigan. ?I knocked down some shots. And the guards played well. They got some penetration where my man had to come help and they got the ball to me.?
Brent made 7 of 8 shots from the field in the second half and was 8 of 12 overall. He had eight points in an 11-5 spurt in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, helping extend a 41-38 Saints lead to 52-43. Eureka (3-1, 0-1) got as close as 55-50 with two minutes left, but a Tom Norton 3-pointer gave Central breathing room.
?J.B. (Brent) gave us a terrific effort tonight,? Saints? coach Jeff Wulbrun said. ?(Jordan) Prosser is a terrific player for them. J.B. couldn?t guard him by himself, but he sure did a good job of muscling him for position and trying to limit Prosser?s second shots. I also thought we gave J.B. good help when Prosser did catch it.?
Prosser, Eureka?s sophomore standout, is listed at 6-5 on the preseason roster and 6-8 in the game program. Either way, he is a key man for the Hornets.
Prosser had 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. Yet, it was Brent who did the most damage in the second half.
?He really did a nice job,? Eureka coach Tim Meiss said. ?He?s big and strong and he has a nice touch around the basket. I think they just started giving him the ball (in the second half).?
Central Catholic also received 16 points and six rebounds from Tennessee-Chattanooga recruit Brandon Dunson, who helped the Saints to 15 of 23 field-goal shooting in the second half (65 percent). Central was 9 of 27 in the first half.
?I think we?ve gotten a little better in each game,? Wulbrun said. ?We displayed some patience when we needed to on the offensive end. I?m real proud of my team?s effort. Eureka is an excellent team. We viewed them as probably the Corn Belt favorite.?
Brent called the Hornets ?a top 10 team in the state.?
?To come in here and get this win was great,? he said.
The Saints received a boost off the bench from 6-2 junior Jeff Collier, who had nine points and three rebounds. He moved into the rotation because Central was without Dan Curran, a sophomore who will miss three weeks with injuries sustained in a car accident.
?What a great job Jeff Collier did,? Wulbrun said. ?He gave us energy and he gave us rebounding.?
Point guard Colin Knapp led Eureka with 16 points. Senior forward Dean Eastman added 12 points and nine rebounds, while 6-1 Chad Blunier had six points and 12 rebounds.
Eureka led 25-24 at the half despite going 6 of 13 from the free-throw line in the second quarter.
?I think we needed to hit free throws early,? Meiss said. ?To me that was the key. I thought we played hard. But they?re quick at all spots and they have Brent down there to clean up any time there?s penetration. They played well.?
