John Cook (official thread)

Just wanted to update before heading out to a cook out - Cook has a 4 stroke lead with 7 holes to play, and... Joey Sindelar is now in second place. Pretty cool stuff if the former Ohio State national champion teammates finish 1-2.

Cook breaks course record at Fontainebleau, wins Montreal Championship
By Associated Press, Published: July 3

BLAINVILLE, Quebec ? John Cook shot a 5-under 67 on Sunday and set a tournament course record with a 21-under 195 to win the Montreal Championship by three strokes at the Fontainebleau Golf Club.

Cook, the tournament runner-up last year, erased Chien-Soon Lu?s one-stroke lead and claimed the $270,000 top prize at the Champions Tour?s sole Canadian stop. Cook?s third win on the 50-and-over tour this season came one year after Larry Mize, last year?s champion, overtook him with a 64 on the final day.

DAVE SENKO: Congratulations, this is the third time you've sat up here as a winner this year, you won Hawai'i at Hualalai, and you've won in Tampa. You've earned $270,000 with this win, which puts you very close to $1 million this year and 270 points in the Charles Schwab Cup, and your 54-hole is a new tournament record, and with that, leading for Ohio State.

JOHN COOK: We were low team today.

DAVE SENKO: Congratulations. And maybe just share your thoughts on the win.

JOHN COOK: Obviously after last year, which was really not my doing, Larry's round was fantastic, so not much you can do. Very happy, very proud to be the champion here, one manufacture I fondest memories of golf was winning the 1983 Canadian Open in a playoff with Johnny Miller, so to add another championship in Canada is very special. I'm very pleased. I'm not kidding, I'm very, very touched by this.

It was a battle all day, but Mr. Lu would not give up. Obviously I got off to a great start. And even when I got it to a four-shot lead, I knew that so much could happen on this golf course. There's so much risk and reward, there's going to be a lot of birdies made down the stretch. So I never felt comfortable, which is a good feeling in the game of golf, once you start feeling comfortable, something bad always happens, so I never felt comfortable.

I kept hitting quality golf shots hole after hole after hole, and was very pleased on how I played today. I didn't hit every shot perfect, but I hit a lot of really good golf shots.

John Cook: Breaking course records and representin'...

Q. What memories do you have of your teammates?
JOHN COOK: Rod was older than we were. And he was a quiet guy, but you knew that there was some fire in this guy. I watched him play some hockey, and the kid can play some hockey, I tell you what. If they had an intramural team at Ohio State, they probably could beat the hockey team, these guys were good. Not that Rod was like a senior, I was a freshman type of freshman, because he wasn't that way. He wasn't like the captain guy, but he was such a nice guy and we hit it off right away. So it was great to be around him for the little bit of time that I was.

And then Joey and I had a great run there. We won the NCAAs. Our team was ranked No. 1 for a lot of our career. So we have got a special bond, as well.

Q. Do you still wear it with pride --
JOHN COOK: Absolutely. I'm a psychotic when it comes to Ohio State. I'm a very, very proud Buckeye, I really am. Dad went there, coached football there. We're a Buckeye family. (link)

MORE INTERVIEWS: Presidents Cup transcript archive

JOEL SCHUCHMANN: Now we would like to welcome the vice captains for the United States Presidents Cup Team, John Cook and Jay Haas.

Gentlemen, thank you for joining us. Maybe if we can start with some brief opening comments from each one of you, we'll start with John.

JOHN COOK: It's a real honor for me to be here actually. To add this to my Aussie trip is just like I said, a real honor.

So I'm happy to be here, any capacity, and to be the next side of Jay and Fred, the seasoned veterans out here, it's even more enjoyable. It's great camaraderie, great group of guys. Guys are happy, and I'm just like I said, I'm an old coach's son, so this is a natural progression for me.

JAY HAAS: Yeah, I was thrilled last time when Fred asked me to join him in San Francisco and to do it again here, I feel a little bit more at ease with what I'm expected to do and what I should do.

But I'm real excited about this team. I think in all of my years of being on a team or being around a team, I think this team has the best chemistry and the best camaraderie, great leadership. It seems to have a mix of a lot of different things. And you're seeing that in the team room and out on the golf course; that guys seem really, really excited about playing.

I think from my perspective, just watching it, when I noticed a couple of years ago, watching golf live is way different than playing it. You really notice a lot of things.

So just to see that excitement that the guys are showing here, they are so excited about the golf course, it's really, really fun to be a part of it.

John Cook looks to fill a major void on his resume

Benton Harbor, Mich. ? John Cook is five shots out of the lead heading into Sunday's final round of the 73rd Senior PGA Championship, but he knows the Champions Tour's first major could be the one that provides redemption.

Cook doesn't need to prove himself. He won 11 times on the PGA Tour, eight times on the Champions Tour and he's a U.S. Amateur champion (1978).

But there is one title that's missing on his resume and that's a major.

Cook, a Toledo native, has been steady all week at the Golf Club at Harbor Shores. He and third-round leader Roger Chapman are the only players to break 70 all three rounds. If the breaks go his way today that elusive title could well be his.

Cook lost in a playoff three times in Champions Tour majors. He has plenty of experience playing under pressure situations. He just needs to finish.

"I had good chances in a number of them," he said. "I just didn't do the right things down the stretch. You learn from that. In those majors I had opportunities and maybe I got a little ahead of myself. Not ahead of myself, but I wanted to get to the finish line and see what happened. And the good things didn't happen.

"So I've learned and hopefully I'll be better for it. I didn't capitalize on my opportunities on the regular tour and that's a big void. That's a black mark, as far as I'm concerned."

Principal golf: John Cook has been close in majors, but no titles
May 31, 2012
Written by
RICK BROWN

John Cook has been the Champions Tour?s most consistent player in major championships. That?s the good news. The bad news is that he has yet to win a major.

?I have to take advantage of those opportunities at some point,? said Cook, making his fifth Principal Charity Classic appearance this week at Glen Oaks. ?Some of the weeks, guys just played a little better than me. Other weeks, I did myself in.?

Cook is coming off a runner-up finish at the Senior PGA Championship in Benton Harbor, Mich. He?s now finished second in four of the five senior majors. The only exception is the U.S. Senior Open, where he has a third.

He has eight top-10 finishes in senior majors for his career, and has lost in three playoffs ? the 2008 Senior British Open, to Bruce Vaughan; the 2009 Regions Tradition, to Mike Reid; and the 2011 Constellation Energy Senior Players, to Fred Couples.

Cook still chasing his elusive first major

FOX CHAPEL ? John Cook knows that a golfer?s place is history is ultimately measured by winning majors. Unfortunately for him, that?s a thrill he?s yet to experience.

?My book won?t be written until I win a major championship,? he said.

The book on Cook, who?s in the field of 81 for this week?s Constellation Senior Players Championship, certainly has some exciting chapters.

As a kid growing up in California, he took part in a photo shoot with Bo Derek, who would later achieve stardom and sex symbol status as an actress/model.

Cook golfed well enough in high school that he was recruited by many major colleges. Golf legend Jack Nicklaus was among those who persuaded him to attend Ohio State.

In 1978, Cook won the U.S. Amateur.

A year later, he led the Buckeyes to the NCAA championship.

As a pro, he?s won 11 times on the PGA Tour and eight times on the Championship Tour.

He?s won over $20 million on the golf course.

But despite all he?s accomplished, Cook says his career won?t be complete until he wins his first major.

He?s hoping he?ll write that chapter of his book this week at Fox Chapel Golf Club.

?There?s no doubt a major championship is in my sights and within my grasp,? he said.

I went to OSU the same time Cook and the boys were winning Big Ten titles and the NCAA championship and ran into him from time to time on campus.

Forward a decade or so at the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Michigan and Cook is in 2nd or 3rd place in the tourney and playing I believe hole number 16. He pushes his tee shot in the right rough next to where my Dad and I are standing. John comes up and must had either remembered me or saw my OSU gear and asked me "What do you think I should hit here?". I say 6 iron, and his caddie is shaking his head "no". John looks at the caddie and the caddie says "7". He looks at me and says "6, huh?" Yes, I say.
"Well, I pay him so give me the 7." He hits the shot and comes up 35 feet short. As he leaves to go down the fairway he turns to me and says "should have hit the 6."

In enemy territory, OSU's John Cook takes shot at Michigan football fans

Lake Orion ? Players left Indianwood Golf & Country Club on Sunday raving about the course and the fans at the U.S. Senior Open.

For at least one golfer, however, it was chance for the local fans to give him some good-natured ribbing.

You see, John Cook, a veteran of the PGA Tour and Champions Tour regular, happened to go to Ohio State. And you can be sure some of the fans reminded him what state he was in last week.

"For the most part, the fans were pretty cordial," said Cook, who was part of Ohio State's 1979 national championship golf team. "There was a few out there that, you know, thought that their one win in the last 10 years gave them reason to spout off, but it was all in fun. It's all in great fun."

Cook, of course, was referring to Michigan's victory over Ohio State in football last fall.

To be clear, however, it was Michigan's second win in 10 years. It appears Cook left out a 35-21 Michigan win in 2003.

But it's all in great fun.

John Cook wins on Champions
Updated: January 21, 2013
Associated Press

KAUPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii -- John Cook caught David Frost on the final hole of regulation, then beat him with birdie on the second playoff hole to win the Mitsubishi Electric Championship on Sunday.

Cook closed with a 5-under-67 at Hualalai Golf Club to catch Frost at 17-under 199. Cook made a 16-foot birdie putt on the 18th green.

Frost shot a 69, missing a 15-foot birdie putt at the 18th that would have given him a win in the Champions Tour season-opener. He had held the lead alone since the 12th hole of the second round.

"He is just really good and he's played really well, especially the last few months of last year," Cook said of Frost. "He's won a lot of tournaments all over the world. He hit some beautiful golf shots today and didn't get much out of what he was doing and I hadn't either. It was kind of a survival day until it got down to the nitty gritty and you knew what you had to do."

Both birdied the first playoff hole (No. 18) from inside 10 feet and went to the 17th tee. Cook hit his tee shot about 15 feet left of the hole and drained it after Frost had come up short with his 20-foot birdie try.

Cook won $309,000 for his ninth victory on the senior tour, to go along with 11 on the regular PGA Tour. He birdied all four par-5 holes on Sunday, while Frost birdied just one.
