Apparently Joe has a problem with Rudy...but not nearly as much as the writer above does :lol:

Quite frankly I've always thought he (Joe) was kind of an asshat...I mean what does he gain by trashing Rudy (the real one, not the movie)? I talked to someone who was actually in the stands that game, and he says people actually were cheering for him to play. Personally I don't get it, but who doesn't love a good Notre Dame slapfight? I think most everyone knows the whole thing about laying their jerseys on the desk of the coach is made up.

I've heard the bit about Devine not really being opposed to Rudy playing and people saying it was actually his idea.

Obviously it's dramatized, it's a movie, the chance that all the fans would know what the hell was going on with the Rudy thing when he was put in is a bit naive. I'm sure he worked extremely hard to keep up with athletes that were obviously more talented though. Like a quarterback knows what it's like fighting in the trenches every day in practice.

Joe may or may not be an asshat but his comments fall pretty short of 'trashing' Rudy. It looks like someone asked him a question about the game and he answered honestly. What was he supposed to do?

Well I've met him briefly...seemed like an asshat to me.

But either way, the way he worded several things makes him sound like a spoiled multi-millionaire brat who is pissed off his walk-on son didn't get the star treatment while he was there. To me anyway.

I actually thought the movie, for what it was, was pretty good. Ned Beatty and a lot of others did a good job with it I thought. Just can't take it too seriously.

That's fine...we can agree to disagree. But from a previous conversation with Street and Smith's:

MONTANA: (Laughs) Well, have you seen the movie?
S&S: Yes, many times.
MONTANA: Well, the sad part of it is that a lot of it?s not true. That?s why they say, ?based on a true story.? It makes for a great movie for the kids.
S&S: So, the part at the end, when they?re chanting his name, did that happen?
MONTANA: No. How he got in the game was that, at the end of the year, they dress all the seniors. We were playing either Oregon or Oregon State. I forget. We got ahead and the seniors got in, and he was one of them, but he didn?t make a sack. The guys carried him off the field as a joke. Now they regret it to this day that they even did it. He was the kind of guy who used to joke around. You know, he badgered, had a pretty strong personality. And nobody threw their jerseys [to coach Dan Devine] so that he would get to play.





He's already changed his story some...but at least he can speak for all the other guys, because he clearly knows what they all think 35 years after it happened.
