cincinnati.com - Joe Bolden taking attention in stride

3/17

Colerain junior linebacker Joe Bolden speaks with a maturity that is beyond his years.

Bolden, 17, didn?t imagine the amount of attention he would receive from major college football programs going into this spring. He said he feels very gracious for the opportunities before him.

Bolden, who is 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, is one of the state?s top players in the 2012 class. Yet, even with 16 verbal scholarship offers and 3.89 grade-point average, Bolden manages to keep it all in perspective.

?Every offer is a blessing to me,? Bolden said Wednesday.

UC was the first program to offer when the Bearcats did on April 14, 2010. The additional 15 offers have arrived since Jan. 26, 2011 when Northwestern was the next to offer.

?I really didn?t expect any of it honestly,? Bolden said. ?I don?t have any control over anyone else?s opinion. I guess other people like how I play.?

In fact, several college programs believe Bolden could be rated as high as their No. 1 linebacker in the state for 2012, according to ScoutingOhio.com director Mark Porter.

?Colleges are always looking for sure things like Joe Bolden to recruit,? Porter said. ?A leader on the field and a great student in the classroom really removes any doubt of what kind of person you are getting. Bolden can take over games on defense because he can get all over the field to make plays.?

Porter said Bolden is very strong at the point of attack and taking on blockers. He expects a significant 2011 season for Bolden because the game seems to be slowing down for him.

?This will be his third year as a starter so there is nothing he has not already seen,? Porter said.

Bolden has already visited UC, Kentucky, Miami University and Ohio State. He plans to visit Michigan March 24 and take visits that include North Carolina, Tennessee and North Carolina State during Colerain?s spring break (week of March 28). He is also considering visits to Georgia Tech and Northwestern during that time.

Other schools are being considered for later visits.

?I am going to try to visit every school,? Joe said. ??I really want to make a right decision because it?s a decision I am going to live for the rest of my life.?

Bolden, who also plays outfield for the Colerain baseball team, is the son of athletic director Dan Bolden and the nephew of Colerain coach Tom Bolden. (Dan, a 1982 Colerain graduate, played offensive and defensive line at Hanover College. Tom, a 1988 Colerain graduate, was moved from quarterback to strong safety at Wittenberg).

Dan said he?s proud of the way his son has balanced his athletics and academics at the school. Dan said Joe has taken all the recruiting attention in stride and will enjoy the upcoming visits.

?He has such a passion for the game. He is the kind of kid on a Saturday night when other kids are trying to find out what?s going on ? him and his friends are getting pizza and watching a string of college football games,? Dan said. ?He loves the game that much.?

While Joe is used to being known within the Colerain community because of his family ties at the school, he said he is used to the attention. Joe said his father and uncle have set ?a good example? in his life.

Off the field, Joe said enjoys going to church on Sundays and visiting his grandmother.

?I like to spend time with family,? Joe said.

As for college, Joe said he hasn?t narrowed his choices yet. He would possibly like to get into coaching one day.

Joe?s immediate concern is baseball season; he?s also thinking about next football season and what he hopes could be a trip to Canton in early December.

?I expect a lot,? Joe said. ?I don?t expect anything less than a state championship.?
