OSU Insider: Tressel uses old 49ers to drive home championship point to Buckeyes
Posted by Doug Lesmerises July 24, 2008
Chicago -- Ohio State was named the preseason favorite to win the Big Ten by conference media on Thursday. You think Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott would be impressed?
It was no shock that the three-time defending conference champs were picked for a four-peat. Since spring practice, OSU coach Jim Tressel has been wary of boring his veteran Buckeyes with things they've heard and done before. So during the summer doldrums, Tressel decided to blind his players with Super Bowl rings, bringing in former San Francisco 49ers Rice, Lott, Joe Montana and Roger Craig to talk to the team. Tressel knows former 49ers owner Ed DeBartolo Jr., a Youngstown native.
"Coaches might come in and talk to you," senior left tackle Alex Boone said recently, mentioning a visit by Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. "But when people come in who have been in our shoes, you tend to listen more.
"You might get bored with summer conditioning and [preseason] camp is so close but so far away, and then they talked to us and re-energized us."
"The room was quiet," quarterback Todd Boeckman said Thursday. "You could hear a pin drop the whole time they were talking because everyone was focused on them."
Those four players collected 14 Super Bowl rings in San Francisco. But while the 49ers won five Super Bowls between 1981 and 1994, they also lost in the NFC Championship four times, solace for the losers of consecutive national title games.
"They said they couldn't remember how many times they lost in the championship game. So they've been through it all," OSU linebacker James Laurinaitis said. "They had a lot of stud players on their team that accomplished a lot. And I feel like we have a lot of star players so to speak. Hopefully we can accomplish the success they had."

Tressel: Michigan game is 'absolutely' more important than matchup with USC
By MARK SNYDER • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • July 25, 2008
CHICAGO – While Rich Rodriguez was busy dodging questions about his tumultuous offseason, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was calmly answering questions – about Rodriguez and Michigan at the Big Ten media day.
“Anytime there’s a change, change becomes exciting in its own way,” Tressel said away from the podium Thursday when asked about the new spice to the rivalry with a new Michigan coach. “The wonder of what is this going to look like. That change and that mystery. not that you have to add a whole bunch more to the Ohio State-Michigan game but it adds a little bit.”

Q&A with Ohio State coach Jim Tressel
In seven years at Ohio State, Jim Tressel has won four Big Ten titles and appeared in three national championship games. With 20 starters returning from last year, the Buckeyes seem poised to make a run at a third straight national championship game appearance.
Tressel sat down recently for a Q&A on this season, the disappointment over two straight defeats in the national title game, how much longer he plans on coaching and his correspondence with Maurice Clarett.
Question: Given your stance that projected first-round picks should leave early, were you surprised that James Laurinaitis and Malcolm Jenkins both decided to return for their senior years?
Answer: From a business standpoint, I've always felt that way. But these guys happened to make decisions that, in their eyes, were more valuable than business. So am I surprised? No. Would I have been surprised if they said, "We've evaluated and think it makes the best business sense to go." I wouldn't have been surprised at that, either. I think I clearly understand why they came back, and it had nothing to do with "I'll up my draft status, I'll make my money later." It was, "I value this experience."

Who is Jim Tressel anyway?
What a joke! First you hear about Holtz, Harris, Moeller, Gruden, and Belloti. Then you hear of some other names that aren't so well known. All of them would be better than Tressel. He's a I-AA coach with only a decent record at that level in recent years. All these OSU fans start talking about how any move to OSU would be an upward move. The Buckeyes stink and have stunk for a long time. As a long time Buckeye I was incredibly disappointed with the selection. We pulled a UNC (basketball - Roy Williams and others) and got stuck with a joke. I am turning in my season tickets!
