Anyone hear if Tressel was back in the valley? I went past the Youngstown Sports Grill and they had a Welcome Home sign, he was probably in the area speaking or something.

He was at a United Way benefit in Boardman. There was a post in Kelly Pavlik's thread.

Tressel: OSU let Big Ten down

Buckeyes' coach rues performance in BCS title game

Published June 12, 2007

The debate over the relative strength of the Big Ten as a powerhouse football conference continues after Ohio State was stomped 41-14 by Florida in the BCS title game in January.

"There were a lot of things disappointing about that BCS championship game," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel told the Tribune. "The most disappointing thing was that we didn't feel we played to our potential.

"But one of the other things that was disappointing to me was the fact that we didn't represent the Big Ten like we should have. I have always felt that if you can get through the Big Ten schedule and get into that championship game, you should be set. And obviously our play didn't reflect that."

Michigan lost 32-18 to USC in the Rose Bowl, Purdue dropped a 24-7 decision to Maryland in the Champs Sports Bowl, Iowa fell 26-24 to Texas in the Alamo Bowl and Texas Tech beat Minnesota 44-41 in the Insight Bowl. Only Wisconsin and Penn State from the Big Ten came home with bowl wins.

Ohio State turning a weakness into a strength
By Robert Rousseau on June 26, 2007 12:58 AM
Let's say that you're Jim Tressel, head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes . Your favored club gets absolutely waxed by the Florida Gators in the 2007 BCS National Championship game, 41-14. Further, your Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Troy Smith, only completes 4-of-14 passes for 35 yards.
Smith, a guy who had stood in there and looked down the throat of great college defenses successfully in the past, was unable to even buy a minute. Though the pressure came from everywhere, it was particularly obvious that the Buckeyes' offensive tackles were outclassed in a big way in terms of athleticism.
Some coaches would do little to nothing about that. After all, getting to the national championship is a great thing by itself. But not Tressel. You see, he immediately saw what needed to be done.

I can't believe this nonsense is still out there. Ask any coach in the country if he would like to have our two OT's on his team and see what he says. These guys practiced against Vernon Gholston, Lawrence Wilson, and Robert Rose all season long. UF's ends weren't any faster or more athletic than ours.

But to the point, JT is definitely a smart man and a top-notch recruiter. Good to see someone recognizing that, even if his rationale for doing so is rather fuzzy (we were recruiting those guys long before the NC game).

Tressel's recruits may rival Matta's
By LARRY PHILLIPS
NNCO

Has Thad Matta triggered the competitive juices in Jim Tressel? Tressel is as secure as a Buckeye football boss can be. Five wins over Michigan in six years, four bowl victories, and two national championship game appearances buy a lot of cache.

Still, when Matta brings in elite talents such as Greg Oden, Kosta Koufos, and perhaps DeShaun Thomas in 2010, the hoops program has clearly upped the ante of the school's national recruiting profile. In that department, Tressel routinely scores a B.

OSU hoops recruits up the ante for Tressel

Nice story, OSUGrad. With a few players already transferring and maybe more, and the class possibly in the neighborhood of 20-22 signees, the Bucks will make a strong run at the national recruiting title for 2008. Brewster and his buddies (aka, "The Brew Crew") are really working really hard helping the staff recruit and it has been paying off. Recruits 10 to as many as 22 will be some really outstanding football players and OSU already has 6 and 7 (Scout and Rivals) of the top 100 players already committed. There could be 10 or more of the nation's top 100 before the class is done. Even without Pryor, that probably will be enough for a recruiting title, not that it matters. You can't always go by recruiting rankings as to determine if the program is going to be good for a long time. So many things happen after players sign on the dotted line--transfers, injuries, and grades are the main reasons for players leaving. How these players, the ones that stay, play on the field is what determines how good a recruiting class will be. If Pryor comes, that will/should solidify the #1 class, even if the rest of the players are 3 and 4 stars.

It's good to be a Buckeye these days, football and basketball. I'm so glad Tress and Matta are on our side. I just hope if they both make it back to the NC game that they will fare better--much better in JT's case. That had to be a fluke game!

Being in Colorado I see alot of football as many of you do but I don't see everything through the "rose colored glasses" like folks in Ohio or on this board. I do not mean to infer anything negative about that last sentence, it's just true due to logistics.

Don't get me wrong, I am a Buckeye and read this board virtually daily.

The one thing that is striking about Tressel is your first impression. Whether it be on TV an interview etc. he comes across positively, calmly, in control or whatever adjective you want to use. We all know that first impressions form 90% of your opinion of a person. It only gets better the more you see him publicly. This can be said of VERY few coaches as a matter of fact who can anyone think that keeps the composre during a game like that?

Yeah, there's alot of PT Barnum's out there, and they're gonna get their share of recruits. But in the final analysis, who do you want screwing the cat?

This looks a couple years old, but I hadn't seen it and I got a kick out of it.

If the whole coaching thing ever falls through for JT, he has a career in educational programming waiting for him.

(I especially love the beginning. He's a hell of a coach, but his acting could use a little help haha.)

Let's start out with a hearty ''Boo'' for Ohio State football head coach Jim Tressel.
John Brown, Morning Journal Writer

It's bad enough Tressel recently decided that after this November, he won't make an annual appearance at the Greater Cleveland OSU Alumni Association's football banquet -- a dinner that's been attended by OSU head coaches for 55 consecutive years and serves as the main fundraising tool for the alumni group's scholarship program.

What's worse is how Tressel had the bad news delivered to the Greater Cleveland alumni: in a snippy ''Here's how it's gonna be'' letter -- full of moaning and whining about how it was unfair to expect someone as popular and in-demand as Tressel to attend the Cleveland banquet every year.

Instead of ''O-H-I-O,'' maybe ''E-G-O'' should be the word to spell out for this move by Tressel.

The Morning Journal - Let's start out with a hearty ''Boo'' for Ohio State football head coach Jim Tressel.
