Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

I was listening to the Jim Tressel interview from 97.1 WBNS Thursday.

http://www.971thefan.com/content/blogs/bishop-rothman/2014/01/jim-tressel.html

I don't think he'll get an NFL head coaching opportunity immediately. But I also kept thinking that he's better than a lot of the other candidates that are being tossed around right now.

One thing I really do believe is once this Show Cause is over, there will be a college that will give him a shot (if he wants it).

i'll say this till the day i die, but jim tressel is one of maybe five guys on the face of the earth that can win in cleveland.

of those five dudes, tressel is the only one interested in the job.

fyi mark may blew five dudes at pitt. saw it on wikipedia.

from holding kicks in training camp for lou the toe groza, to establishing a golden era of ohio state football, and god willing to the browns so fans like myself, Litlbuck, and countless other fans can see the browns win a super bowl before we die.

article in the canton rep this week talked about him maybe going to detroit with caldwell. just can't imagine JT coaching in the state of michigan.

Tressel applies for top job at Akron

Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has applied to become president at the University of Akron. The school says he’s among 19 applicants. Current President Luis Proenza is leaving his position in June. The school says it’s accepting applications until it fills the job.

I hope he gets it.

A whole bunch of folks, a State and a US Representative, Business Leaders, and even Ron Jaworski, want him to be the next President for YSU. There seems to be a lot of push from the local big wigs for this:

Although he never said he was interested, they were excited that he didn't say no:

It wasn’t a yes, but state Rep. Robert F. Hagan said Jim Tressel didn’t say no when asked if the former football coach was interested in becoming president of Youngstown State University.

“He said, ‘There is a process that is very important that has to be followed,’” Hagan said.

He put the application to become interim president at Akron three weeks before the YSU job opened up:

However, in his letter to Akron's board of trustees, Tressel asks that he be selected interim president.

While the board is seeking a permanent successor to its retiring president, Tressel wrote in the Jan. 25 letter: “I recommend an alternative option that meets the urgent demands of our university. Decisive and focused leadership is required to provide the direction necessary to face the challenges and seize the opportunities that will position the University of Akron for future success.”

He also wrote: “A time such as this requires an interim leadership approach to successfully position the university to deliver on an ambitious student success agenda.”

That letter came about three weeks before Randy Dunn announced he was leaving YSU for Southern Illinois University.

YSU's outgoing president had the job for about 7 months before he decided to bolt.

Just sayin': Looking at the list of applicants for the Akron job (link below); it appears that there are past college presidents, vice presidents, and deans with (probably) several decades of proven successful "academic administration experience". I'd say Tressel a long-shot for getting the job. However, he might be a good fit for YSU presidency.

Agreed. Looks like he's up against much more experienced competition. I don't have the knowledge to say whether or not he has the chops for the job, but it would be an interesting hire for YSU. It seems there would be mixed feelings about his hiring there, some will always question his experience for the job, and to others he'll always have Tat-gate hanging over his head.
