Buckeye freshmen honoring Tressel

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Freshmen who never played a game for Jim Tressel showed support for the former Ohio State coach by wearing bracelets with "JT" on them when the players briefly met with reporters Wednesday.

"A lot of the guys have them," tight end Jeff Heuerman said.

Tressel was forced to resign May 30 after the university discovered he broke NCAA rules.

The Buckeyes open fall camp this weekend, with the freshmen reporting Saturday and the upperclassmen on Sunday.

Joel Hale, a defensive lineman from Greenwood, Ind., said he still stays in touch with Tressel even as he looks forward to playing for interim coach Luke Fickell.

"With the transition in coaches, it affected me but it never changed my mind about being a Buckeye, not at all," he said. "I still call up coach Tressel every now and then, just to see what's up."

Asked what Tressel says to him, he said, "Just encouragement. Stay positive and keep working hard and things will fall in place."

Hale said he didn't have a JT bracelet - which were handed out by a football staffer - but wishes he did.

"I like `em," he said. "I probably need to get one. I think it's supportive."

Cont'd ...

I'm just speechless about this one. Kids can support their dad or brother or childhood friend by writing their name or number on their shoe...but no way they should honor the guy who gave them an opportunity to play college football and earn a free education. :(
If they had written JT's initials on their shoes, it would have been ok. Given everything that's gone on this season, the players promoting the sale of something, without it first being authorized, is something that the school can't really allow to happen. I'm sure that some sort of tribute will be paid to JT, but promoting sales of apparel, before it's cleared, isn't something that an under the microscope program like tOSU wants to let slide.

If there was a little swoosh next to the initials JT the team would still be wearing them.

If it wasn't a coaching selling them for 15 dollars each?

If the players had made them I would have been totally behind it, the kids showing support for there fallen coach.

The idea that a coach was selling them is a whole can of worms that really isn't needed at this time. Did the players maybe feel pressured to buy them? I would say no, but the question would have been raised.

I just don't think its a good time for issues like this to be popping up for the program.

Fucking insane they can't wear the wristbands. The only reason that makes any sense is that it's because we have yet to go before the NCAA. What is wrong with players using their money to buy something and wear it? Anything they wear can be construed as "promoting the sale of.." - it's all bull-fucking-shit. I've had enough of it this offseason.

Seriously.

Am I wrong to think like this?

That's exactly the reason. How hard is this for people to understand?

While the players' hearts are in the right place, I'm glad that somebody had the wisdom to put a stop to this for now.

Just asking, but are you of the belief that the NCAA could/would punish the institution for kids showing support to an ousted coach?

What's the difference between this and a Livestrong band? Who cares if it says JT on it. What about initials or messages written on tape, shoes, etc? It's BS IMO.
How many people here wanted a wrist band once they saw the players wearing one?

That's why they shouldn't be wearing them. It turned the players into advertisements, which means they aren't amateurs anymore.

What's the difference between that and buying a #2 jersey in the bookstore? The NCAA isn't getting a cut of the wristband money.
