If there's one thing tressel needs to improve on, it's getting the F-ing plays into the huddle quicker ... for the love of god! Anyone who has been to a few games this year would know what I'm talking about because you can see the play clock the whole time. I feel like alot of the time, the QB only has enough time to line the guys up and yell hut. For a coach whose bread and butter is eliminating mental mistakes and avoidable penalties, you've got to think this is an area where an improvement can be made. While I'm at it, is it just me, or is this years team playing the worst "tressel-ball" we've seen in a while ... the number of penalties and turnovers is very uncharacteristic. But if you look at all four years, a crystal football will get you alot of extra credit and bring that grade up to an A.

Overall, Tressel gets somewhere between an A and an A+. And if anyone wants to dispute that, I got 5 words for you: "1st National Championship since 1968."

I gave JT an A on the poll. And that's only because of this year's Texas loss. This team should be competing for a National Championship, and although the Texas game wasn't JT's fault, I think a major chance was blown this season.

Here's how I would grade each JT season:

2001: B+. Lets face it, the team was in shambles, Mr, Perfect was horrible in his first season kicking, Bellisari was Bellisari, and the OL was inconsistent at best. That being said, the team improved as the season went along. He lost some heartbreaking close games, and the season culminated with OSU getting the scUM monkey off its back, and they fought back hard in an Outback Bowl loss that will live in Horrible Call Infamy.

The team doesn't win the National Title in '02 without Tress' great work in '01.

2002: A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++. This grade doesn't need to be justified. Nuff said.

2003: A-. A heartbreaking loss to Whisky. Still had a Top 5 season without a pulse at TB. That's not easy to do at Ohio State.

2004: B+. Can't give him a grade any less in a season where we throttle scUM and roll in the Bowl game (although it was Okie State). Overall, it took him too long to get the ball into Ginn's hands, and he probably cost the team a couple games by not evaluating the Zwick/Smith situation correctly early on.

Important things to look at when looking at an Ohio State head coach:

First off...Winning seasons and bowl games are a must...you MUST have this every year. Tressel has.
You have to recruit well in the state of Ohio. Tressel does.
Must put the team in situations where they have a chance to win national championships at least every other year. 2002, 2003, 2005
Must at least have a .500 record against scUM...AT LEAST. 3-1
Must win a national championship. 2002
Must win a Big 10 championships. 2002, 2005(?)

The only thing i'd like to see is maybe more dominance in the Big 10 other than 2002, but we are favorites right now in 2005. So it's respectable, but if we don't win the Big 10 this year, then I'd give Tressel an A-, but to this point it's an A.

The reason I voted A+, is because the sense of tradition Tressel has brought back to tOSU. Rivaries, Carmen Ohio, Skull Session, Senior Leadership...they all mean more now than they have in a long long time. That's what tops it off...the way he goes about it.

You don't need to be 14-0 every year to be an A+ coach in my book. I wouldn't trade Tressel for any other head coach in the country.

:osu: I like this thought, I wouldn't trade Tressel for any other head coach.
I enjoy reading posts on this site - many good folks, with good football knowledge. It allowed me to vent my reckless thoughts after my Texas-loss-hissy; sort of helped me get my Buckeye football fan head right. I appreciate the opportunity to participate.

I am going to go with an A-, the first year wasnt really his team. The secone was A++, the third was an about an A-, the fourth was bad, maybe a C+ but again, not entirely his fault so that wont hurt his final grade much, this year still has the possibility to A+, but I am feeling likely an A to A-.

Perhaps the biggest flaw I may point out is that he is TOO loyal. However, the scUM and bowl wins, on top of the old school rah rah feel he brought back are phenomenal.

The fourth year was bad? I hardly consider a year in which we win our bowl, and beat scUM bad. Yes, we lost to Northwestern, and were 4-4 in the Big 10 conference. Those are things that Ohio State should not be doing, but with the talent we lost from 2003 (a record amount of draft picks) and the injuries we had during the season, it really isn't surprising we lost the games we did. I give Tressel credit for being able to find and put together a team that was one of the strongest in the country down the stretch.

No matter how a season plays out, I'd much rather be 8-4 (4-4) with wins against scUM and in the bowl game then 10-1 (7-1) with a loss against scUM. Maybe all Buckeye fans don't feel that way, but I do, and I think they should.

I don't think Tressel has had a bad year yet, but I guess the biggest let down year he's had is 2003. Losing the Wisconsin game wasn't that horrible, it's hard to repeat. But the scUM loss was gross. We were better than scUM that year...we played flat. Sure it's hard to go into Ann Arbor and win, but I can't see grading a year an A- when we lose to scUM. That's a season within itself. I'd say no matter what you do the rest of the year, if you lose to scUM, the highest i'd rate the season is a B.

That's just me though. For most coaching jobs, losing just one game isn't that big of a deal. But at The Ohio State University, losing or winning The Game is the most important part of the season. If you fail to beat that team up north, then you've failed on your biggest goals of the season, because you likely didn't win the Big 10, you aren't going to the national championship game, and MOST IMPORTANTLY you didn't win The Game!

I voted "A" because I am a Tressel homer and it's that simple. :)

Actually I put a little more thought into it than that. If he beats scUM in '03, I would've given him an "A+" because that's the most important game every year barring an NC game. And as long as I don't have to be embarrassed and disappointed every year after the scUM game like I felt during most of the '90's, he will continue to get an "A" from me. Yes, I am a simple man with simple desires. Beat scUM!! and I will remain a happy man.

I voted A+. Are there certain areas where he can/could have improved? Sure. The sum of his accomplishments at OSU are extrememly lofty though, and in that respect, asking for anything greater than what he's done so far is being greedy and unrealisitic. I guess you could say I grade on a curve, and in college football, JT sets the curve.

I agree with this statement, but went with A-. If we had pulled out the Texas game, I would have given him an A.
this is the reason i give him a B+. he got outcoached by mack brown. he wins that game, we have a great chance at another NC, but now it will not be as easy
We didn't execute against Texas, simple as that. False starts on 3rd and short, dropped passes on 3rd down, Hamby's drop, Huston's near miss. You guys need to watch Texas and see how they dominate everyone else they play... we played one heck of a game on defense. Just because we've had the fortune of pulling out almost every close game doesn't mean we will pull all of them out. If our guys execute on any of 3 or more drives, everyone is talking about another great top-10 win by Tressel.

A- for the off field things under his tenure. Ultimately the buck stops with him. Just like the grading scale at tOSU it would be damn impossible to get an A+. Hold this pole next year and no more troubles he gets an A. Only Woody could replace him. In my mind he is the next best thing.

near miss? He missed it, wouldnt a near miss be him barely making it?

jwins, I agree completely with everything you said, except for the 'you guys need to...' line. But do you think it's not right to lower JT's grade somewhat since we did lose the game?

By the way, I've seen most of Texas's games over the last year and a half. And I ranked Texas #1 in my poll this week. I'm not sure why you assume that I haven't seen them play much, and/or I haven't been impressed.
