Simple

2001- A- (would have been a rebuilding "B" but almost an A for beating Michigan, but then lost the Bowl Game...A-)
2002- A+ (Need I explain?)
2003- A Two losses hurt some... A+ to A (Wisky) to A- (Michigan) to BCS bowl win A)
2004- B (Beat Michigan... and won the Bowl game... but the NW and Iowa are glaring)
2005- No Grade.

So if you weight an extra third for the MNC... its about a 3.75 GPA.

The poll is about the last four years. Seeing as offensive productivity has been an area of concern rather consistently, I gave him a B+. Without the NC, I say he is a B-. C or C- on offense, and pretty solid A's on defense and special teams. I should probably bump him a little higher for his quippy comments to the press, but I don't care about that stuff as much as coaches do.

so i guess the fact that Tressel dropped that TD pass and missed that FG cost him couple points, huh? :roll1:

I don't want to whine about the Texas game, but I have to discuss it to explain why I rated JT's performance a little lower since we didn't win that game.

The TD drop, the late fumble, and the extremely late safety weren't the only reasons we lost the game. But the coach is ultimately responsible for everything that happens on the field anyway.

He made decisions that allowed Texas the FG at the end of the first half, along with the 15-yard penalty after the pooch kick. I didn't think the pooch was a bad idea, and the penalty hurt more, but that 3 points was big for Texas.

Late in the game, if he would have played total Tressel-ball when we had a 6-point lead and a first down at the 29-yard line with 6 minutes to go, we would have run the ball 3 straight times, keeping it in-bounds, and put it in the middle of the field with about 4 minutes left. Incomplete passes on 2 of 3 plays kept about an extra minute on the clock. The unfortunate catch of the batted ball by Pittman moved the ball from the middle to the left hash, as well as losing 4 yards. From the middle of the field, a Huston kick of the same quality would have been good, giving us a 9-point lead.

JT rarely gets criticized for throwing the ball unsuccessfully. But I was in the stands, just looking for us to run clock and set up the field goal. We threw the ball, and got no points when we really didn't need a TD.

I love JT, and I already stated there's nobody else I want as tOSU's head coach. And I will not "Monday-morning coach" him - I will only criticize a specific action of JT when I see what the options are and make my decision at the same time he does, before the play happens. The series of plays just before the FG miss were out of character for JT, and the strategy didn't work.

But we might still get another shot at Texas this year.

:oh: :io:

amazing... people criticize him for being conservative, then criticize him when he gets aggressive and it doesn't work... he just can't win with you people... :roll1:

*wants.....to......ding......must.......resist*

shesh... how can the fact that the PLAYERS dropped the ball be blamed on the coach??? if Hamby catches the ball, we're #2. period. you cannot blame that game on Tressel. he put the kids in the position to win, and they didn't pull it off... it's just that simple.

I agree with the earlier poster about giving an A- based on, among other things, the Texas game. I blame him for switching the QB's ad nauseam - I feel he should have stuck with Troy for the rest of the game after he threw the TD pass in the 2nd quarter. Same with the Michigan game in '03 - Scotty Mac had the hot hand in the 4th quarter. We win that game and we're playing for a share of the title again. The guy is a terrific coach and I'm thrilled to have him, but I find it hard to grant a full A.

way to resist to ding me. like it was said earlier everyone is entitled to their opinion and dinging me for an oppinated question is just plain dumb IMO. no it might not be his fault for the dropped balls, but he did not put them in the best position to win IMO. switching quarterbacks every other possession does not put anyone in the best postion to win. also, it sounds like your just blaming the whole game on Hamby, which is completely ignorant on your part. numerous plays make us the number two team in the country, including play calling a la tressels fault. the guys a great coach that knows how to win but he messed up a game. maybe you should go watch the game again and see what i was talking aobut.

I have not criticized him for being too conservative. I believe when you say 'you people' you are talking about 2 different groups of people.

I am not somebody who is trying to have it both ways.

..without a national championship his grade would probably be a B.

Depends how you construct the situation. If you take out the entire '02 season and grade only on '01, '03, and '04, a B would possibly be a little generous. But if you only switch the national championship game to a loss and leave everything else as is, a B seems pretty stingy.

I'm going with grad school grading here, where anything below a B means "you suck". I like the A grade simply because I think he's met or exceeded expectations in virtually every aspect of his job. But I'll say A- because, otherwise, where would you go with it if the '01 and/or '04 teams had been great?

this is the reason i give him a B+. he got outcoached by mack brown. he wins that game, we have a great chance at another NC, but now it will not be as easy

I don't see how people can say Mack Brown "outcoached" Jim Tressel. Our offense failing to execute after three--count 'em, three--turnovers in Texas territory, Hamby dropping the TD pass, and Antonio Smith not tackling the kick returner in the end zone, is what lost us the game, and not Brown doing a better job than Tressel.

I gave him a straight-up A, since I'm essentially throwing out his first season as a "break in" season. In his three seasons since, he has gone 33-6, with a national title, conference title, two BCS bowl wins, and 2-1 against Michigan (to go along with his Michigan win in his "break in" season). The only coach in the country who has done better over the last three years is Carroll at USC, so I think Tressel rates a solid "A".

i guess he probably didnt get outcoached, but i still dont agree with the quarterback changes constantly. i think smith was doing great and should have stuck with him. i dont think that was the greatest idea ever. i guess with everything else into consideration he is a good coach and deserves higher than what i rated him as.

I understand the A votes...completely.

However, I gave the B+ because I think his best days are ahead of him. We've seen growing pains on offense (still ongoing), recruiting (pulled schollies and mistake offers), and some discipline issues (hopefully resolved).
