Our coach WAS willing to cheat

Leave to Kashmir to fail to fathom the English language again. There's a difference in "violating rules" and "cheating". "Violating rules" is what OB did when he gave the $6,000 to help out the Radojevic family in war-torn Yugoslavia. "Cheating" is using money or other favors to coerce players into coming to play for your school (ala Michigan)...huge difference, Rashmish.

I always liked this guy :wink2:

If Obie really cared about the kid and his family why didn't he tell to just go back to Europe and play pro there to help his family out?

there is no difference. By giving money to a recruit you are violating rules and you are cheating. Ed Martin was only helping out Chris Webber in war-torn Detroit after all.

one of my buddies had this to say. I found it amusing:

"It's stupidity like this that makes me ashamed to be a Buckeye yet again. Seriously, O'Brien dropped the ball by not calling Louis Irizarry to have him steal all records of the basketball team's cheating while he was trespassing on campus. Can't the scumbag basketball coaches/players and the criminal football players/coaches get along and work together? If not Louis, I'm sure Tressel could find someone on his team with some B&E experience? Where's Chattams when you need him?"

Just heard the official statement from Obie's lawyer. Per that statement Obie gave financial aid to a distruaght family of an overseas player that did not influence the player's decision and that player did not come to OSU.

Most disturbing to me, Obie requested a meeting with OSU to discuss details of what happened and Geiger refused to meet with him.

This stinks.

umm... that Serbian player, who 'was in dire financial straits' was ruled Ineligible to play in the NCAA due to the fact that he was playing PROFESSIONAL basketball in Europe... dire financial straits, my ass...

in a way, i'm glad OB is gone, because i don't agree with his philosphy of bringing in overseas talent when we have BETTER talent right outside our front door... why not try to get the good ones close to home? when the overseas guys aren't superstars, we wasted our chances on the Good ones at home both now and in the future... anyway...

but MAN. i didn't want it to end like this...

Playing pro basketball in Europe does not mean that he was making a lot of money. If you play one semipro game, you're eligibility is history. If he was playing for a real team and making real money, the NCAA would have known that he was ineligible long before they did.

OB has not recruited an overseas player since Kobe Ocokolich or however you spell it. The last foreign player of any kind he recruited was Velimir and that was 4 years ago.

oh... well, it was a backhanded attempt to give him the benefit of the doubt... now you just shot that down...

oh well... OB would never have made it to the Final Four w/out Ayres, no matter what anyone says... once he got 'his guys' in the system, the system started a downhill slide...

i think Gieger put it rather poigniantly with his lack of comments... OB might be a good man, but he's lost his priviledge to coach... at least for Ohio State...

if he had any professional ability....there was an agent around to fund him....

me thinks ob got played for a chump....nice guy syndrome....

6000 us dollars is a lot of money in serbia......

Wait a minute. You're trying to make it sound like OB destroyed Ayres' empire or something. If you remember right, this team sucked out loud when OB showed up, and even during his first season. They weren't worth a darn until Scoonie Penn stepped on the court, and that young man didn't have a thing to do with Randy Ayres. Also, if I remember correctly, wasn't OB's first year also Michael Redd's true freshman season? If so, how does that make him Randy Ayres' player? I imagine about as much as it makes Dustin Fox, Lydell Ross, Mike Nugent, et. al. Cooper's players. In my estimation, that leaves guys like Ken Johnson and George Reese. Solid role players, but not nearly on Penn or Redd's level. After all of this, wasn't it OB who brough in Brian Brown, who also was a pretty darn good baller in his own right? Please set me straight if I'm wrong about any of this.

I have not lost my respect of affection for Obie, buit after thinking this through I am becoming increasingly angry. If he was that moved by the Eurpoean players plight he should have resigned his position as coach and then given him the money. What he did instead was knowingly (this is not an obscure rule) put the immediate future of the OSU BBall program in jeopardy and then conceal his action until it was going to be exposed in another investigation. College teams are filled with children from needy inner-city families.

Rules is rules. You don't wait for a violation and then decide how to interpret them based on the character of the man who violated those rules.
Regardless of how we wish to interpret his intent, Obie did not buy the family groceries or pay their rent. He gave the money to the player with the (according to Obie) understanding it would go to his family. If those were the facts surrounding a Tommy Amaker action we would be having a ball with it and laughing our butts off at the Michigan fan's attempts to explain what a decent guy Tommy is.

Geiger did what he had to do and I wish Obie the best. Let's hope this is where it ends.

oh8ch...

i agree.....something is clearly rotten in the state of denmark......

i would like to think that ob simply got played by a family....

again.....i dont think it would have been difficult for ob to find an agent to take a "chance" on a 7-3 kid.....thus removing ob from the situation....

Guys,
this is going to get much worse before it's all over. With Biancardi allegedly arranging for a booster to funnel money to a player, this is a huge deal. We'll likely lose a couple scholarships, postseasons, have to take down the Final Four and Big Ten banners (Boban would've been ineligible, just like the Felonious Five), and be put on probation.

When this civil suit is heard in front of a jury this August, I can guarantee some ugly shit is coming out.

The worst part may be that, while the NCAA is coming up with an appropriate punishment, OSU may have a hard time convincing a top flight coach to come aboard, with unknown NCAA sanctions hovering over head.

DiHard and Oh8ch... you have summed up my thoughts on this one.

Good luck to OB wherever he winds up. I'm sure he'll be fine while the OSU BBall program sleeps in the wetspot again. I just hope we can get/keep some decent players and don't get down to that pathetic level of Ayers' last year and OB's first.

cleve....

while its not pretty....i really dont see it getting near the martin/scum level......

and they didnt get hit that hard.....hell look at missouri......this pales in comparison....we (as buckeyes) have morals and are in disbelief at this....

unfortunately.....college basketball is is the the one sport that the ncaa really has no answer for.....

we talk about college football players and their hardships.....college basketball is ten times worse ......with 2000 times the outside influences (aau coaches, early draft, agents, inner-city uprbringing, etc..etc.).....

I have been scramling for info on the lawsuit and found the following on the Ozone. It was posted by Mr. Ed - so it is reliable info:

The suit is filed by Salyers but does not name Sabovic as a defendant. The defendats named are Dan and Kim Roslovic. The suit Alleges that Dan Roslovic is a booster at Ohio State, and that Roslovic promised to pay Sayler $1,000 per month to house Savovic. It further alleges that Roslovic called Saylor from Biancardi's office to propose the deal. Suit claims that the money was not paid if full and therefore the suit was filed.

Lawsuit ALLEGES that: "After Boban moved into plaintiff's home, Paul Biancardi, for the purposes of protecting the Ohio State University, instructed Plaintiff to state that Boban's relationship with the Plaintiff was a result of Boban playing basketball with the Plaitiff's son should people inquire about his relationship.

This is VERY serious shit.
