Jim Knowles (DC Penn St.)

Oregon is Knowles kryptonite. I dont see Franklin pushing the right buttons following either. Lol
He did well in the Rose Bowl. I have no ill will towards Knowles. He leveled up the D, and gave OSU a natty. He is part of the success.

I also feel like he made a bad career move based on stupid internal stuff, and OSU leveled up.

It is what it is, and I feel like everybody wins.

Knowles did good. His time is the past, and let's move on.

I would also observe, so far as can tell, he has not diddled any little boys either. Big improvement for them.

I actually loved the Knowles hire and I think he has an excellent Defensive football mind... for the pros. Kids aren't hanging around long enough to understand everything he wants to do and it all has to work together or it fails. It wasn't until we simplified things with a few really good gadgets that we just hit our stride.

The guys in the WHAC have praised MP for making it all simpler and now they just run and fuck shit up without thinking. Sometimes best leadership is getting the hell out of the way

i actually don’t think he would be good for the pros. I think he’s best at programs with lower expectations who would allow him multiple years to work with their players. Patience is even thinner in the NFL, but he would be welcomed at schools like Ok St, Rutgers, VA Tech, etc.

Maybe a decade ago. NIL even changed all of those rosters.

"The reason we gave up 24 points to UCLA in a single half isn't because I can't take the talent I have and create a scheme that works. It's because Penn State hasn't given me a guy with the talent to play The Dick. Which is THE COOLEST position in football that I came up with myself. You just need a single guy who can pass rush, stop the run, press cover, spy, or play a deep zone all by himself at an All-American level. That way the QB never knows what he's doing to do! I'd go out and find him myself, but the only recruiting I do is shaking the kid's hand at the urinal when he's here on an official visit." - Jim Knowles before Halftime, 10/04/2025 at 5:00pm.

After all of the gnashing of teeth over Larry Johnson, we can all see clearly that's not the issue.... I think what really turned the tide was Day getting into his ass after the Oregon game and his involvement in the meetings and, clearly, being micromanaged did not sit well with Knowles. I thank Knowles for being apart of forcing Day to stop being the coordinator heading into last year and the rest will be history as Day continues to develop.

Some of the shit that these stupid Buckeye blogs were reporting and hinting at didn't even make sense. LJ called what the DL did on plays and Knowles called what the LB and secondary did? Really? Day was letting that happen?

It's almost like someone who doesn't know football made that up. Like a sister of a coordinator. And shitty Buckeye blog writers swallowed it up because they thought they had a source for the first time in their lives.

When in history has a coordinator left a program coming off a historic national championship for a job that wasn't a step up?

The turnaround on D last year after Michigan was incredible. It's almost like someone else was calling the plays!
