Foster Signs Contract Extension with Buckeyes

Head coach re-ups through 2011-12 season after leading Buckeyes to all-time record 30 wins last year

Jim Foster, who is 73-25 at OSU, will enter his fourth season with the Buckeyes in 2005-06.

Columbus, Ohio- Jim Foster, Ohio State women's basketball head coach, has signed a seven-year contract extension that takes him through the 2011-12 season with the Buckeyes. The announcement was made Saturday by Miechelle Willis, OSU associate athletics director and senior women's administrator.

Foster, the 2005 Big Ten Coach of the Year, has completed three seasons at Ohio State, compiling an overall record of 73-25. Last year's team shared the Big Ten title, won a school-record 30 games and made a third-straight appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Foster, who originally signed a five-year contract prior to the 2002-03 season, will be granted additional "rollover" years on his contract each time Ohio State wins the Big Ten regular- season title or reaches the NCAA tournament. The extension also includes possible bonus incentives for academic and athletic success, as well as bonuses for winning Big Ten or national championships and reaching and advancing in the NCAA tournament.

"Jim has done a fantastic job in his three seasons at Ohio State," Willis said. "We are excited about both his academic and athletic achievements by our student-athletes in those three seasons. We wanted to make a statement about his commitment to the overall development of the young women in the program."

"Ohio State provides the opportunity to compete at the highest level year in and year out," Foster said. "I'm looking forward to spending the next seven-plus years in a great city and state."

Foster started his coaching career at St. Joseph's University from 1978-1991 and then moved on to Vanderbilt for 11 campaigns from 1991-2002. He will aim to reach a personal milestone next season, needing 23 victories to reach the 600-win plateau for his career. Foster's 577 career triumphs ranks him in the Top 15 among active winningest NCAA coaches (by victories) and in the Top 20 for all-time wins.

The Buckeyes tip off the 2005-06 season with a home date Nov. 22 against Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m. in Value City Arena.

Buckeyes Garner League Honors

Ohio State Head Coach Jim Foster has been named the Coach of the Year in the Big Ten for the third consecutive year and OSU center Jessica Davenport has been named the Player of the Year in the Big Ten, also for the third consecutive season. Foster guided Ohio State to its third-consecutive Big Ten championship this season. His team have compiled a record of 44-4 for a winning percentage of .916 over the past three seasons. The Buckeyes compiled a record of 15-1 in Big Ten play this season and overall record of 26-2.

INDIANAPOLIS ? Ohio State rewarded women?s basketball coach Jim Foster with a three-year contract extension yesterday that will keep him with the program through the 2014-15 season. "I feel very comfortable in the environment," Foster said. "It?s a great place to live. I work for terrific people. The facilities are just terrific. And the state has great high school basketball programs and great AAU programs. It?s got very good players."

He's done a fantastic job, what a great record and awesome recruiter. No school out there can compare coaches in major sports. Tressel, Matta, Foster, Bob Todd, and Tom Ryan.... we're very fortunate.

Bob Hunter commentary: Buckeyes, Foster overcome hurdles, win with new pieces

There is no coaching manual that tells you what to do when you lose stars the caliber of Jessica Davenport and Brandie Hoskins, no simple list of directions with steps marked a, b, c and d.

Even when some of the returning players are very good and some of the incoming players are dripping with promise, there's a good chance the new team isn't going to come close to matching its predecessors' accomplishments. It's just the way it is. There are just too many things that can go wrong, too many potholes waiting to be hit. The name on the jersey is the same; the team is completely different.

It's not easy to see that, though. When a team has won three consecutive Big Ten basketball championships the way the Ohio State women had, expectations go up and the level of difficulty for that fourth title drops, or so it seems. Winning league titles starts to seem almost like a rite of passage when it's not that easy.

How good is Foster?

There are several individuals close to the women's b-ball team that feel Jim Foster is limited as a coach. First, they say he is a lazy recruiter and doesn't really go the extra miles that a Jim Tressel or Thad Matta will go to bring in a recruit. They argue that his inability to land any of the 4 top recruits in Ohio this year is a direct result of that. Next, they say he is quite content to win the Big 10 every year and then flame out in the NCAA tournament - he really doesn't care about the tourney. They say he is overly critical of the players which is leading to some discontent among the team. Finally, they say he is starting to lose support among the girls high school coaches around the state, and starting to lose the support of many of the players - both present and past.

I have followed the Lady Bucks from a distance (I live in another state) dating back to the Tara Vandermeer days, and after suffering through the years after Tara, I have been very pleased with the accomplishments of Coach Foster's teams. Obviously, 4 league crowns in a row is impressive, and the overall record the last three years of the Davenport/Hoskins era was outstanding. Even this year, which everyone recognized would be a transition year, resulted in a league championship. I would think with the youth on the team, we should be looking for even better things in the next three years.

Although I initially dismissed the critics as members of that vocal OSU group that is never satisfied with anything less than a rout in every game and a national championship every year, I have become convinced that they are not simply malcontents, that they really are close to the team and truly want OSU to be a national power such as UConn and Tennessee.

My reason for posting is twofold: 1) does anyone on this board have any information to support or refute their position, and 2) what do others think of Jim Foster as a coach?

I have watched the Ladies' team mostly on TV but I also follow the recruiting and have done both for quite a few years and I tend to agree with your post.

I have no idea how Foster lost 4 out of the top 5 high school seniors in Ohio this year. I possibly could blame some of it on his style of play where he seems to like to feature a low post player. I am not saying that as bad because Lavender is an excellent player and probably will be an All-American in the next couple years but that's really beside the point. Foster seems to recruit a very good low post player but does not surround her with quality outside shooters there were available in Ohio will in the past few years. I also think that he should play more of a up-tempo game but since he puts so much emphasis on the low post he doesn't seem to like to run.

One of the other things that bothers me about Foster is that he shows absolutely no emotion. Most of the other coaches in the Big 10 and other places do a little bit of yelling and clapping for their players but Foster just seems to stand there and be philosophical.

Well Ohio state bring in a new women's coach in the near future... I highly doubt it because as you mentioned as long as they keep winning the Big 10 that will be enough. In addition, his graduation rate of players is very high and that is not a knock. Someone on this board said the other day that they were disappointed with the attendance at the women's game but I think your Foster would play some tougher teams and have more of a up-tempo game people would support the program more than what they have in the past couple years.

I was so sad to see Tara leave because she is such a good coach and recruiter.
