Source: Texas QB Snead to transfer

08:54 PM CST on Wednesday, November 29, 2006

By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News AUSTIN ? Texas freshman quarterback Jevan Snead has asked for a release from his scholarship in order to transfer, a source close to Snead said Wednesday.
Snead's availability for Texas' bowl game could be in question because Snead wants to enroll at a new school in January, the source said.
That would leave Texas with starter Colt McCoy and walk-on third-string QB Matt McCoy, who has never attempted a pass in a college game. The only other scholarship quarterback on the team is Sherrod Harris of Arlington Bowie, who is redshirting.
The source said TCU was a leading candidate to land Snead, a Parade All-American from Stephenville, although the source said Snead would like to take visits to other schools once he is released from his scholarship.
Snead completed 26 of 49 passes (53.1 percent) for 371 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in backup duty this season. Snead will have to sit out a year after transferring, but because he played this season, he can use his transfer year as a redshirt season and still have three years of eligibility left.
Snead lost the battle for starting quarterback to Colt McCoy, who was getting consideration for Heisman Trophy votes before suffering a stinger in the first quarter of a loss at Kansas State.
Colt McCoy set a school record for TD passes in a season with 27 and has throw seven interceptions.
Snead initially committed to Florida but changed to Texas after top high school recruit Tim Tebow committed to Florida.

I don't want to sound like I'm attacking this kid's character or anything, but he was committed to Florida, and turned away when another high-profile QB (Tebow) came aboard. Now that he's lost out to Colt McCoy, he's looking to go elsewhere again. I can understand the fact that he wants to actually play and not just be on the team, and I hope the next stop is his last and everything works out for him.

Seeing Snead's experience though really makes you thankful for young men like Troy Smith and Justin Zwick. Smith could have gone to West Virginia and started early, but instead decided to come to Ohio State and compete with Zwick and prove his game - and now he's gonna win a Heisman Trophy and maybe a national championship for the Buckeyes. Zwick in the meantime has stuck it out, probably in part because of his level of dedication to his team and teammates, and also probably because part of him knows that he's still a good QB and if (knock on wood) something happens to Smith, he's right back in there as THE MAN at QB (anybody else remember the Alamo Bowl?)

Don't get me wrong, if I'm the coach at TCU or some other program like that, I'd take Snead in a heartbeat. However, talent isn't the only ingredient for being successful in college football. It also takes a burning desire to compete and strong dedication to the team. I appreciate the players OSU's had at the QB position the last several years that have had those qualities in abundance.

I'm not sure it's a matter of the kid being afraid a competition. It seems like McCoy is a stone cold lock to be the starter here on out and Snead the backup. I think the diffrence between Zwick and Smith is that they were sophmores and battled for the job, while McCoy/Snead are freshman. If Smith/Zwick had the lost the QB battle as a frosh, they've had less invested into staying.

I can't say I blame him. I watched McCoy throw up duck after duck against aTm. It was sickening to watch. The kid's arm looked like a 10th grader's (shoulder problems lingering)? Snead should've gotten in that game before the 0:20 mark. The kid's got talent, so no reason to sit behind someone in the same class.

Texas would be screwed in the bowl game. A weak/injured McCoy and a walkon?
