Cowboys to activate Jaylon Smith, McFadden off NFI

In a move that could be an encouraging step forward, or simply a bit of ceremony as we head into the latter part of the season, the Cowboys plan to activate second-round linebacker Jaylon Smith (knee) from the non-football injury list.

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys' executive vice president, said as much on KRLD-FM in Dallas on Monday but was cautionary in his words. Smith, who sustained serious knee damage in a Fiesta Bowlloss to Ohio State last January that caused damage to both his ACL and MCL, will not see any change in his rehab routine and is not expected to practice any time soon.

Running back Darren McFadden is also expected to come off the NFI.

The activation opens up a three-week practice window for Smith, though it is highly unlikely his surgically repaired knee is in any shape to sustain the rigors of an NFL practice or game right now. NFL.com's Gil Brandt noted this week that Jones and Smith both told him that the "nerves in Jaylon's knee are regenerating" and "signs pointing in right direction." With any luck, he could start tearing up the practice field during organized team activities in the spring.

An upbeat Jaylon Smith keeps the faith on his road to recovery

The traffic slog up to AT&T Stadium spares no one, rich or poor, gifted or unathletic, because 100,000 people descending on an area near a baseball stadium and a Six Flags amusement park is destined to be chaos. On opening night for the Dallas Cowboys earlier this month, Richard King took a cab as far as he could, then went the rest of the way on foot.

King works security at a hospital about 1,500 miles away in Pennsylvania, and before he left to see his first Cowboys game, he bought a Jaylon Smith jersey. He loved the young linebacker's story -- how Smith came back from a gruesome knee injury in his final college game -- and figured the No. 54 shirt would stand out in a stadium full of Daks and Zekes.

Smith not only recovered from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a torn lateral collateral ligament and a stretched nerve in his knee; he is starting at middle linebacker for Dallas and currently leads the team with 23 tackles, according to the coaches' breakdown.

Green Bay Packers reach agreement with former Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith on 1-year deal

The Green Bay Packers didn't land former All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore but may have found help for their defense after all in former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith.

Smith reached an agreement Thursday morning on a one-year deal, his agent, Doug Hendrickson of Wasserman, told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The move came less than 24 hours after news broke that the Packers were a potential suitor for Gilmore shortly before he was traded from the New England Patriots to the Carolina Panthers for a 2023 sixth-round draft pick. But the Packers did not have enough salary-cap space to acquire Gilmore in a trade because they would have to inherit the remaining $5.8 million of his base salary on this year's salary cap. The Packers have only about $6.5 million in cap space and still need room for the in-season moves that injuries might necessitate.

Smith, however, fits under the cap because the Cowboys are on the hook for the entirety of his $7.2 million base salary this season as a result of veteran termination pay rules.
