Jake "LLLL" Butt (traitor)

It's funny because for 25 years Michigan has kept hiring coaches that treat the game officials like shit for 60 minutes, then wonder why they don't get calls.

Bill Lemonnier, who was a Big Ten official for two decades (including The Game in 2006, three BCS bowls, the Auburn/Oregon national championship), is now with ESPN as an officiating consultant. During the Florida/FSU game Saturday night, he was specifically asked about officiating The Game, and Lemonnier immediately brought up what it was like to listen to Lloyd for three and a half hours.

When a referee that hasn't officiated one of your games for over a decade still uses you as an example of how challenging it is to officiate a game when one of the coaches is an asshole ... maybe it's not the refs ... it's YOU.

This

Go back and watch any edition of The Game from 1969 on. It's all they do.

Bo, Moeller, Carr. The only ones who didn't do it that bad were Rich Rod and The Fat Garbage Man.

Now Jim-Bo is back and desperately aping anything the real Bo ever did.

So, we can expect no National Championships and a losing bowl record?

Not saying I don't feel bad, but if he did tear his ACL, particularly if it's the same knee which tends to be much worse, I'll still go back to the completely moronic decision to come back. The dude was a 2nd rounder at the TE position, which is basically a maxed out grade. Now coming back with a 2nd round grade in a vacuum, sure. But he's had a torn ACL. Just didn't make any sense.

I know it is controversial about guys skipping bowls, but this may be a perfect example why they do.

It's a tough call for me. I could have played in my last game of my career, but with a nagging slight Mcl injury I chose not to. I had zero chance at a multimillion dollar career either. I was just worried about walking when I turned 50.

The team doc saw me on thurs before the game and said he would clear me to play. I asked what he would tell the coaches if I didn't want to play. He said he would feel ten times better because I really shouldn't be playing on it. That's how it goes. Players are disposable.

I hope for Butts sake it doesn't hurt his draft stock.

I believe a team will draft Butt based upon his proven potential. Just like they did McGahee, Smith and others. I guess I can't say if it's as high as he otherwise would have been, and I don't know that signature money (guarantee) will be enough to retire on, but I'd say he's going to get some manner of pay day regardless. Just my view.

Edit: And, really a career ending injury can happen any time these guys suit up. Remember KiJana Carter? He played in his bowl game, but one game later - a pre season game - and his career was over. Unfortunately, this risk is a part of the game.

Which is why I wouldn't rip McCaffrey or Fournette for skipping their bowls, or Cook for choosing to play. It's easy to do that from your couch, and with the internet many are far too comfortable doing it. Butt may recover just fine, I hope he does, but anyone who recalls what happened to Jaylon Smith - who may never play again - knows how quickly it can end.

I can see it both ways and I will not condemn a guy for sitting out or playing.

I wonder though why it is not that big of deal for a coach to jet on his team to take a new gig vs coaching the bowl games? I know some catch a little flack, but I don't see as much as the players sitting out do.
Jake said the same thing before the game when discussing guys like fournette. Naturally many told him he was wrong or would feel differently if he was injured. Sadly we found out that was false.
