Jake Diebler (Head Coach)

Read in several places that Diebs and Bjork are 'negotiating' for a new salary for Diebs. Article goes on to say that Diebs won't be back unless they come to mutual resolution. That gives credence to Mike's 3 year contract, but never get all the information, do we? Anyway, personally believe that Diebs has done enough to stay around. But would think that maybe the 'negotiations' might hinge on how much NIL is allocated to men's basketball. Also heard that tOSU is 14th in B10 basketball NIL. It's a given that football is #1, but if Gene Smith were still around, he'd certainly want to spike up basketball, as it's a Sears Cup point producer, so the monster that is tOSU athletic department should flex a bit. Finally, it was noted that LeBron needs to be tapped for some on-going donations for basketball. If he's proud of his locker in tOSU basketball room, maybe he can/could spring for some NIL money? Thinking $5 million per year might get us some top flight personnel......

I’m not sure what that means? Of his own volition?

I had the length of the contract wrong, but even if it WAS 3 years, there's no way Diebler is voluntarily walking away after this year...

Well, for certain-sure I wouldn't walk away from, what? $3.5mill/year? Naw, I'm too mercenary. However, if I had a nickel for everytime I read that tOSU coulda had Dusty, believe we could give Diebs a nice raise. Seriously, probably not about salary, agreed, but do believe that Diebs is asking/demanding a larger NIL commitment from tOSU AD's office. We're certainly spoiled, and don't believe that tOSU should ever be outspent on a consistent basis. 14th in B10? Absurd. Top 5, absolutely. Hunch that Bjork is hemming and hawing about 'guaranteeing' such a robust increase. Diebs did get two croppers in the kids from Duke and Kentucky, but believe his choices have rebounded (get the metaphor?) nicely with the last two seasons. Anyway, just food for thought. But the article sounded pretty much like lines were drawn in the sand. Hope not.

This man's whole career to this point is built off of beating Purdue and pretty much that alone.

I'll give the credit that he got them to the tourney when it looked like that wasn't going to happen at a point, but He's going to have to do something a lot more than the bare minimum next year (and of course beating Purdue to accomplish that) and the way he had the team completely unprepared for the first half of this game is not giving great confidence that he's going to be the guy to get us out of this funk.

A lot of what happens next year depends on how they finish out the roster. I realize the results in the portal have been poor (for the most part) so far ... which begs the question, will Diebler get good players in the portal this season? I hate to say it, but with NIL being problematic, I am doubting them at this point. Most of the guys he's brought in through the portal have not been what the program needed, their best add this past season is Tilly who started and helped but not quite what they needed.

Let's see who we can keep. Mobley and Bynum will be getting recruited hard. We keep them and Thompson is what he's purported to be and we should have enough to improve a bit even without Bruce. I'm not sold on Diebler, but given his inexperience, and the improvement in intensity toward the end of this season, I haven't written him off yet either and hope he can show growth. I would love to see him add a wise old head to the staff to help him out with high-leverage situation play choice and design and substitutions, but my expectations are also dependent in part on the level of program commitment from the administration. When they played with intensity this season, they were really pretty good, but too much of the time they didn't have that intensity and situational IQ was lacking. Lots of games lost on the margins based on those issues. I really want to see a commitment to physicality and consistent intensity.

When you can't afford the highest end of players it's all about finding the right fits.

Tilly in the grand scheme alone is not a bad player, but in the situation he's put in, being the main big man on a Big 10 team, this is not a great fit for Ohio State.

Diebler is almost certainly going to have to sacrifice offensive ability down low in the portal if he wants to succeed, we aren't affording a beast who can do it all. we really need a couple of guys who can physically at least hope to hold up against the better teams in the B1G (and other conferences)

Tilly should have been a backup at OSU, as he obviously is the type of player that is not capable of consistent success at the highest level in college basketball. He had a skillset that fit, just not the strength and athleticism to excel when the going got tough. Moving towards next season, you would expect Ojianwuna to play, and he will provide a more athletic big to the team, but his offensive skillset is not as developed.

Tilly as an offensive big man off the bench would be a great fit, when he's the starter you are constantly relying on though it's definitely not good.

I don't think anyone should have much expectation from Ojianwuna. A big man coming off a leg injury, good chance he never regains form. But if he does bounce back effectively, I would trade offensive skill for Physicality and Athleticism down low any day for our situation.
