J.J. McCarthy (once a tCun, always a tCun)

I've watched what I can on both and honestly I would have been happy with either one. McCarthy can throw the ball a mile and is probably a little better athlete when it comes to escapability. McCord has such great touch on the ball and can really throw guys open. In his film, McCarthy is throwing to a lot of wide open guys whereas McCord's film shows him fitting some balls into some really tight windows. He's great on timing and shallow routes, which we know Day loves. What I really like about McCord is his ability to change arm angels ala Baker. He can make all the throws and can adjust to pressure in his face without bailing. He's also got a great build...approaching college-ready size whereas McCarthy will get killed if he's still playing at his current weight. OSU and Michigan both got really good QBs in the '21 class...the big question is how they are developed.

:day:

Good points wad.

I think they really are two completely different QB's....Kyle is much more polished and 'ready to play', JJ is going to need to sit for a couple of years. JJ is a better athlete but at this point he's a project....big arm, more of a thrower still than a passer, great size, but he needs to develop his footwork which is sloppy but not terribly surprising, and that should help his accuracy. His completion % is high but like you said, the competition is weak.

Kyle is an impressive kid...his 3/5/7 step drops are already polished, love how he keeps his eyes up field all times, has a better arm than I think he gets credit for (he's got a clip of rolling to his left and throwing 50 yards), anticipates, better accuracy, etc.

Kyle is a good 2-3 years ahead of where JJ is, but Jimmay loves to be the QB whisperer so the pairings for each school makes sense. Is JJ going to have the time to develop though, or will he be rushed out there? Has Jimmay shown he can develop HS kids up there? Not yet.

Can't go wrong with either, but I'd take Kyle everytime.

*In short, Kyle has a lower ceiling (yet still high, especially in college) but a much higher floor. JJ projects better beyond college.

It's his legs... how he's running, such that it is... and then, his legs completely stop moving... it's as if he jumps into the defenders arms to be tackled. It's absolutely mesmerizing. Always has been.

Just imagine if he didn't have the natural athleticism, that all 5 star caliber recruits seem to have, to protect him.

A kid could get seriously hurt playing football at that level if he weren't, let's say, in the same ballpark of athletic ability/size/strength of the other 21 guys on the field with him.

That's why recruiting bona fides are so hard to get and so well vetted. If they just handed them out to any jock sniffer who blogged on a fan site for free/meager pay they could get some kid brain damaged by over rating him, to get clicks from a gullible fan base (hypothetically speaking of course), thus putting him on the field with guys who are legitimate big time P5 football players.

Agreed. Thank Woody we don’t live in that world.

You make a good point, but you'd really need to have a college coach who was completely unaware of concussion protocols for that parade of horribles to even materialize. And.. let's be honest, there's no college coach who would miss obvious signs of a concussed player... especially a quarterback.
