I started boycotting Burger King about 12 years ago when I ate it for the first time and it tasted like shit. FWIW, the McDonalds commercials are 10X worse. I don't care how much hip-hop music you put in your commercial, McDonalds is not "gangsta". Everytime I see one, I think of Calvin and the "whack-arnolds" skit on Chapelle's Show. "Ewww nigga, you smell like french fries!"

I like the buckin chicken commercials. McDonald's commercials are all about getting catchy songs into kids' heads.

I personally hate the Capital One damn vikings commercials. (but, I agree, the Applebees' one is also craptacular.)

One commercial I think is brilliant is the Avis commercial playing a rap song showing all these whiter than white suburbanites. Very funny.....

I'd bet that 2 of the most successful tv ads are the BK and Axe body soap. I think the humor/shock value hit the preferred audience. I'm not ever driving a VW but think the commercials are funny.
