I heard the Marquette AD asked to talk to him and was put on hold till he got off the phone with DeShaun Thomas.
Uh-oh. Did he inform his players he was leaving first and more importantly, was it a Marquette provided cell phone?

Great hire. Don't know why they didn't go this way 2 years ago. I never understood why they took a risk on a scumbag like Sampson...particularly after the Davis fiasco.

Marquette coach hired by Indiana Crean set to rebuild power, image
Published on Wednesday, Apr 02, 2008
From Beacon Journal wire services

Indiana University will hire Marquette's Tom Crean as its basketball coach and is expected to introduce him at a news conference today.
University trustee Philip Eskew confirmed the hiring. Eskew said Crean had signed a letter-of-intent with the university and met with the team Tuesday night.
The hiring comes near the end of a tumultuous six-week period in which former Hoosiers coach Kelvin Sampson resigned amid an NCAA scandal, interim coach Dan Dakich replaced him and then lost four of seven games.
Dakich also suspended guard Jamarcus Ellis for disciplinary reasons for the Hoosiers' game at Penn State, and announced Tuesday that Ellis and guard Armon Bassett had been kicked off the team for missing two scheduled events.

Tom Crean, who led Marquette to the Final Four in 2003, inherits an Indiana program in turmoil.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana is turning to Tom Crean to bring back respectability to the Hoosiers. About two dozen wins a season would help, too.
After a tumultuous season and turbulent coaching search, the Hoosiers hired Crean yesterday as what they hope will be a long-term replacement for Kelvin Sampson. Sampson resigned in February amid a phone-call scandal that included five major allegations from the NCAA.

that phone call had to be initiated by thomas, correct?
I think at this time of the year you are probably correct.
was it a Marquette provided cell phone?
He was probably using his landline when he was talking to Sullinger
.....he has a ton of work ahead of him though.....
Like getting five scholarship players to put on the court next year. It will be interesting to see if IU gets hit with any major sanctions. It is sort of hard to believe he would take that job if he knew some sanctions were coming IMO

Indiana reverses recruiting penalty

Posted: Saturday April 26, 2008 09:55AM ET

Indiana reduced the recruiting penalties Tom Crean inherited and will allow its basketball coach to make 10 days of off-campus visits between now and July 31. Recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer said altering the restrictions is "enormous." Almost since Crean was hired April 1, IU had been exploring ways of easing the self-imposed recruiting penalties levied against former coach Kelvin Sampson and the staff. Sampson was limited to 14 off-campus recruiting days. He used 10, and interim coach Dan Dakich used the rest. Grace Calhoun, IU's associate athletic director for compliance and student development, said that because the penalties were self-imposed, the university had some degree of discretion in changing them if it felt it could make an appropriate case with the NCAA Committee on Infractions.

IU must be pretty confident that the Infractions Committee is going to go easy on them or I don't think they would do this unless they are very cocky which is highly possible.

Indiana University has reached a settlement with former interim men's basketball coach Dan Dakich, paying him the $185,000 he was scheduled to earn next school year. Dakich replaced Kelvin Sampson after the NCAA accused Sampson of five major rules violations in February. The university gave Sampson a $750,000 buyout.
Cell phone calls are certainly expensive if made at IU.
