How do they know the pit bulls intended to hurt the children? The two pits I had loved kids. They would "lunge" at them to play.
the article definitely leaves much to interpretation as to whether the dogs actually attempted to harm the kids. but to be honest, this is normal behavior for all dog breeds. not pit bulls, not rottweilers, ALL dog breeds. when i lived on a farm i always carried a rifle or shotgun with me when i went into the woods. it wasn't because of the coyotes or the black bears. it was because of domesticated dogs that owners let run loose. these dogs form packs and essentially hunt. unlike wild animals they have no fear of people and won't hesitate to attack you.
i came face to face with a coyote once. walked around a rock face and found myself looking straight into its eyes from 20 ft away. after 30 seconds of sheer terror on the part of the coyote, it slowly walked away posturing that it wanted nothing to do with me.
a german shepherd along with a yellow lab attacked my sister in our front yard. she wasn't playing, wasn't running around making noise. she was standing motionless looking right at them. they were walking through the woods and when they saw her they darted to her. they weren't interested in playing and they didn't want attention. they were hunting and to them, she was prey. the shepherd went high and missed her face by an inch, the lab went low and took her down by her left leg. if it wasn't for our doberman she would have been seriously injured as there was no way i would have been able to get to her fast enough. oh and before you ask, the dogs came from two different households over 10 miles away. both had children in the home and neither animal had ever bitten or acted aggressively towards any of them (according to the owners).
with 100% honesty, no exaggeration what-so-ever, id rather walk up on a black bear, coyote, wolf, or bobcat unarmed in the woods than i would 2 domesticated dogs. wild animals look upon people with fear. a domesticated dog doesn't. i guarantee you id pull the trigger faster on fido than i would any wild animal.

If the pit bulls wanted to attack the children, that dog wouldn't have even slowed them down.
yep, just like in the recorded history of mankind a lone dolphin has never defended a human from a great white. nor have packs of dolphins protected people from groups of hammer heads. their way to small and wouldn't have a chance against a big powerful shark.
assuming the situation was as stated in the report (that the pit bulls were going to attack the kids, and i do agree that this may not have been the case) the terrier didn't stop the pits from attacking the kids by preventing it. it stopped the pits from attacking the kids by giving them something easier to chew on. the pits were likely out wilding and looking for something to beat up. the terrier struck them as a more enjoyable/easier target. that doesn't mean the kids were not in immanent danger until the terrier stepped in.
