Is Scheduling a Big Out of Conference Game Worth It?

recruits know that besides playing in a premiere conference like the Big Ten, and competing in The Game, they also can look forward to one big matchup against an elite team almost every year (Texas, USC, Miami, etc).

Iowa & Michigan could have easily lost another game or two this year, making our SOS uglier. As someone alluded to, the Big 12 was supposed to be much better (OU was supposed to rebuild, but be good, and A&M was supposed to be a much better team). It is a comfort blanket, not a curse. Besides the national attention we get from these marquee games, they ensure that we will not be left out of the BCS if we win out.

i think it's definitely worth it for the simple fact that kids (recruits/players) like the big games. the big exposure...the high-profile matchups are very exciting for everyone involved really. as a fan, i know i get way more excited for a texas or miami as opposed to a ohiou. or a sandiegostate. i think it's intriguing and very exciting for prospects mostly. so worth it. plus, if you win that game and it's close down the stretch...forget about it, you're IN.

I think it's worth it, and in fact I think we should do everything we can to schedule Notre Dame in the near future...let's hang one L on them every year towards that Gator Bowl tie in, I say.

Always worth playing a Big OOC simply because very few programs can plan on a competitive team year in - year out. One of the reasons that we are as dedicated to this program is that OSU is a Trend-Setter! Given the opportunity to market & recruit on a national scale, kids will always draw to a program that will give an opportunity. Plus, an opportunity at individual performance AND a BCS potential will reward! Even though 34 years had passed since a NC; I Always had hope (excuse the 90's) of another NC!
It's called class. Class breeds resent. Never, Never let our Bucks stoop to strategy within an imperfect system. Bucks (give Texas their due) deserve to stay ahead of the pack. Fu%^ those who resent; let them become Trend - Setters!:osu:

they still have, I think, 6 more years w/ scUM, so no way until that is over, and even then, no way.
We'll have to be content with stomping the crap out of them in Tempe

Winners aren't afraid to play winners.

Ah, Woody would be proud of that statement. :)

Totally agree about it being worth it. There are risks, yes. But, in this case, the potantial rewards greatly outweigh the risks. There are too many upsides (exposure, recruits, etc...). My one concern is that we continue to schedule these BIG OOC games as early as possible. The Texas game was just about perfect in terms of timing.

risks? what was the negative impact to loosing to texas again? lets say we don't play texas. we schedule eastern weastern poly-tech school for the deaf blind mute instead. we win easily and loose to penn state. we're still ranked somewhere between #4 and 10 on the outside looking in. we keep the schedule the way it is and beat penn state we are ranked #3. we win out... we're ranked above USC. we're the highest ranked 2 loss team in the country. hard to argue with that reality.

I'd say yes, but it also depends somewhat on what decision the BCS people make at the end of the year. To me, a loss vs. Texas (especially one that's so close) is worth more than a win over Montana. ND was rewarded too much for their close loss to USC, but at the same time, it should be worth more than a victory over a bad team, and about as much as a victory over a decent team.

The fact we're ranked so high is proof that the pollsters (and especially the computers) think this way. Hopefully, the BCS does, too.

Well here is my take. While I love the games and love the publicity, there is no longer a SOS in the BCS.

Oregon gets rewarded more by pollsters by beating Montana than we do by having a loss to Texas. It is all about wins and looking at your record when it comes to the pollsters.

If you put Oregon against Texas instead of Montana they would have 2 loses too.

In the end I have to say I want to play these games, but this is just another reason why there should be a playoff. More teams would schedule games like this if they knew one loss wasnt going to but them on the outside looking in.

Can you guys imagine if the the second week of the college football season looked like this.

Us vs. Texas
USC vs. Miami
Va Tech vs. scUM
UGA vs. Oregon

Or games like that and then the next weekend have games like that again. Then have the conference games and then have an 8 team playoff. I think many fans would be in heaven.

Except that the computers all use some manner of SOS in their calculations and OSU has been in front of Oregon all year.

There it is!!! BINGO #3!!!!

I look at it this way: we can't play for the national championship every year, but if we are right there in contention, I'd rather be us that Oregon, or Texas Tech if they had finished 10-1. Think about it, if we are 9-2, but played Texas State instead of Texas (and lost to Iowa or something) would we be in this conversation? And even if we were 10-1 and played Texas State instead of Texas, wouldn't we be sweating more bullets than we are right now? Would we be in any better of a position than Oregon? Would we be as high as we are in the polls? Who knows?

The Texas game is what gives us our window above Oregon...it slams shut if we hadn't played them.
